I'm so nervous, my 87 year old grandma has been diagnosed with a large gall stone. The doctors are obviously worried about surgery due to her age and afib. Tests indicate her gallbladder is still functional.

My mother isn't telling me much more than that and I fear she's trying to protect me since I recently lost my fiancé.

Isn't there a way to radiate/dissolve a gall stone that doesn't involve surgery?

How common is surgery like this for someone in their 80's?

My grandmother had open surgery for gall bladder removal in her early 90s. Hospitalized for a week. This was before the laparoscopic slit procedure was developed. My wife on the other hand at age 50 had the laparoscopic procedure -- she was one of the first to have it -- and was hospitalized overnight.

My mother had gallbladder surgery at 85, spent one night in the hospital. She did very well during and after the surgery. She is for the most part very healthy but does have a heart stent and she had no trouble with her heart during the surgery.
