My doctor has told me that I need to stop taking ibuprofen on a daily basis. She prescribed Celebrex for me, but insurance wouldn't cover it and it was too expensive for me without insurance. So I'm still taking the ibuprofen. I take gabapentin for nerve pain but it doesn't help with my back pain, just the leg pain.
I have a muscle spasm in my lower back that has been pretty severe for the last week. I've tried a few different things for it. Wearing something very tight on my lower half seems to help, like one of those compression slips (you can find men's compression shirts and shorts in the athletic clothing department, you'd want the kind that fit tight and close to the skin) Using a heating pad and then a back massager on the sore area helps for a little while. Icy hot didn't do much. My mom gave me a couple of muscle relaxers and tramadol pills that she had left from the last time she had an injury, and that didn't help as much as I thought it would. I guess I'll see what my doctor suggests...I was hoping to avoid going, but I can barely stand up and I can't sleep more than a couple hours because of the pain, so it's probably time to give up and see the doctor.
Well I guess the government does not want us taking ANY pain medicine! Today in the news...
["Back in 2005, the FDA warned that taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen and naproxen increased the risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Last week it took the unusual step of further strengthening this warning."]
i have 3 bulging discs. The orthopedic surgeon said he would not do surgery until the pain was going down both legs. I was given Mobic for pain. He offered cordezone shots and I declined. He also said Aleve every 8 hours. Taken on time they have been amazing to take the edge off. I take them for 5 weeks on and 1 week off.
Then I was told about marijuana tincture. I made my own using a recipe online. THIS is the answer! The drops almost give total pain relief. There is NO high.
Since finding this I went for acupuncture. It made such a difference I found out the back pain was masking bursitis! So now I'm tryng to find anwers how to fix the bursitis! Tincture helps for this too although I don't want ANY pain!
Maybe something here will help you.
Oh! Wobenzym, found on Amazon, are enzymes that have helped alot too.
Thanks so much for the information. I definitely will try most of it. I need to get some relief from the pain. I have it in the lower back and also it is intense in the right hip. It goes down the back of my legs and sometimes the front of my upper legs. I need relief. It is starting to depress me. I am not the kind to get depressed but this is getting to me. Thanks. I have wondered about acupuncture. I am looking for someone who knows what they are doing. Thanks!
I have back pains and leg pains. Is there anything OTC that will help with this?
You need to see an orthopedic surgeon. If you have pain radiating down your legs you need surgery. Nothing else will help you. You are trying to find a way to avert surgery, but your just fooling yourself into thinking that there is another answer.
I have had over 40 surgeries so I know I bit about what I am talking about. I just had a knee replacement last month because I could no longer walk to the end of the block without pain. Yeah it would be great to find something to take away the pain, but that option doesn't exist. I had the surgery, now I can walk up to a mile without any pain, and my knee is getting better every day.
Don't put things off and certainly don't listen to people who don't understand the nature of your problem, and the solution. Acupuncture won't help. Tried it. And don't go to a chiropractor.
Also, don't listen to strangers on the internet who insist that surgery is the only way to relieve your pain, ESPECIALLY when you never mentioned any particular diagnosis from your doctor. It's possible you're just having a sciatica flare-up, and it's possible that an NSAID every day during the flareup is enough to get you through it. It's also possible that you have broken vertebrae, or bulging disks, or a pinched nerve that isn't your sciatica, or a fractured hipbone, or any of a myriad of possible things, each of which involves different treatments, and some of which can be "instantly" cured by simply buying a new mattress.
Go to a doctor, get a diagnosis, and if it seems like a logical next step, look into a specialist for whatever diagnosis you have.
As for the thread title question, I posed it to my dentist and he said ibuprofen. I made clear I wasn't talking about dental work only, but just something to have on hand at home for general pain relief if needed.
I know I'll get flamed for this, but have you tried alcohol taken internally. Before modern pills like aspirin, that was about all there was. Worked for centuries. This fact gave me a whole different spin on western movies. Obviously, in most of those westerns, the saloon and whiskey were a popular gathering place in most towns. No wonder. Imagine hours in the saddle, no modern medicine and men with bad backs etc. The only relief from the pain was alcohol. Just don't overdo it and don't drink and drive.
