Here is an alternative ranking that directly uses the scores for each specialty (each measured score is rated on a scale of 0-100 by U.S. News). This is much more accurate than the way U.S. News assigns points (objective specialties 2 points for rank 1-10 and 1 point for rank 11-20, subjective specialties 2 points for rank 1-5 and 1 point for rank 6-10). U.S. News also just breaks ties by counting the number of Honor Roll ranked specialties (top 20 for objective specialties and top 10 for subjective specialties). This method of tie-breaking is obviously unfair to hospitals that rank 11-20 in the subjective specialties.
So here are the rankings directly from the specialty rankings. Scores can theoretically range from 0-1600.
note: change from Honor Roll ranking is in parentheses
#1 - Mayo Clinic, 1253.7 (+1)
#2 - Cleveland Clinic, 1093.6 (+3)
#3 - Massachusetts General Hospital, 1088.5 (-2)
#4 - Johns Hopkins Medical Center, 1072.7 (-1)
#5 - UCLA Medical Center, 997.6 (-2)
#6 - New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell, 979.7 (+1)
#7 - Brigham and Women's Hospital, 963.5 (-1)
#8 - UCSF Medical Center, 922.7 (0)
#9 - Hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania-Penn Presbyterian, 887.8 (0)
#10 - Northwester Memorial Hospital, 877.4 (+1)
#11 - Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University, 875.7 (-1)
#12 - UPMC-University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, 872.8 (+1)
#13 - NYU Lagone Medical Center, 864.8 (-1)
#14 - Stanford Health Care-Stanford Hospital, 829.1 (+1)
#15 - Duke University Hospital, 827.5 (-1)
Interestingly, the major shifts in rankings all occur in the top 5. Cleveland Clinic made the biggest jump up to no. 2, and Mayo Clinic is way out ahead at no. 1. Obviously, some of these are very close and could be considered ties (within 5 points could be a tie).
U.S. News also began measuring hospitals' performance in common care. So far, only 5 are out, but in the future there will be at least 12. They are: COPD, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, hip replacement, and knee replacement. Here is a list of how the honor roll hospitals compare in common care ordered by number of high performing procedures.
High performing in all five:
Mayo Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital, Stanford Health Care-Stanford Hospital
High performing in four out of five:
NYU Langone Medical Center - COPD, heart bypass, heart failure, hip replacement
Duke University Hospital - COPD, heart bypass, heart failure, knee replacement
High performing in three out of five:
Cleveland Clinic - COPD, heart bypass, hip replacement
Brigham and Women's Hospital - heart bypass, heart failure, hip replacement
UCSF - COPD, heart failure, hip replacement
Hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania-Penn Presbyterian - COPD, heart bypass, heart failure
High performing in two out of five:
UCLA Medical Center - heart bypass, heart failure
New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell - COPD, heart bypass
Northwestern Memorial Hospital - COPD, heart bypass
Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University - hip replacement, knee replacement
UPMC-University of Pittsburgh Medical Center - heart bypass, heart failure
Not high performing in any common care procedures:
Johns Hopkins Medical Center
