It's not the ulcer itself, but all of the changes people make to accommodate it.

Dealing with a duodenal ulcer that stemmed from a misdiagnosis by a negligent E.R. (Long story!) My pain felt much like yours, so it could be either peptic or duodenal. Would up in the hospital for 2 days because of massive internal bleeding. They prescribed me over the counter Omeprazole and a bland diet. Funny thing is they tried feeding me lasagna while in the hospital.

Avoid caffeine and chocolate like the plague. Only pop that did harm my ulcer was Sierra Mist, and even that was avoided for the first 3-weeks when starting Omeprazole.

Drinking apple juice is a good choice being low with acid, and supposedly help with healing time.

Milk products really helped, I would have an instant carnation (vanilla) before bed and a milkshake in the morning made from all natural vanilla with no high fructose corn syrup. Milk coats the ulcer and with it being cold was very soothing.

Reduce your stress as much as possible, that was my biggest help with healing. It has been 8-weeks now, and feeling much better, I am only taking Omeprazole once a day now and doctor. said I could stop.
