Unfortunately sometimes we have no choice but to hope that our care will be proper, and we'll be safe.

Upon admittance for a back surgery I had a plastic bracelet out on that said that I was allergic to a certain pain killer.
I woke up after surgery and it was the first thing the nurse had for me...I say oh yeh???and showed her the bracelet...she was surprised.

As I was leaving the hospital my surgeon visited me briefly and said "here, you might need this for pain".
He handed me a prescription.
Guess what....it was (again) a prescription for the drug I am severely allergic to.

I can't imagine what could have happened had I not been on the ball, or not had all my wits about me.

Be vigilant towards knowing what you need...take care, hope everything proves OK for you.
true! Be an advocate for your care.

My mom was given a steroid that she was allergic to. The doctor didn't read the chart... And the nurse simply did as ordered... It eventually led to her going on a respirator.... Her throat swelled. Two months later and much to do with staff not Documenting certain things...She passed away.
It was horrible! We had to sue... Not for the money ( despite what ppl who never been thru this can ever understand!) we sued to get them to change policy ... Yes they settled. but I to this day would have settled to have my mom back...

Find a place , check their records... It's indeed scary to be sheep heading to the shed...

I listen to a PRP medical doctor every weekend. I just heard his Sunday show. He makes claims that PRP and Stem Cells will keep one from surgery. I still haven't done them as they are not insurance covered.

He says day in and day out MOST of his patients come in with failed, botched surgeries of many kinds, from knees to hips, backs, shoulders you name it.

And he is a medical doctor, ucla medical school and so often his parting words are: stay away from doctors.....I'm a huge believer in that mantra. I live with a botched hip replacement and wonder where I'd be had I never let them cut me.

Now, to the OP; I think many of us have faced the same thing you are facing. If it is possible of course you need to try and find another doctor or system. This just happened to me: luckily I have medicare and a supplement or actually an advantage program. I was able to find a practitioner I am happy with.

Now, someone said, go out of your system and pay the difference. I feel for you as I know that is easier said than done if you are on a fixed income.

There really is no easy answer to your problem and we hear stories like yours to often. Many doctors treat us like specimens and not humans.

I have to agree we have the great medical world to put us back together from a dreadful disease or horrid accident, but on Prevention, our medical industry fails.

Even many horrid diseases can be managed with other than pharma drugs and surgeries.

I sympathize with you. My husband just went to doctors (I rarely go), and he showed the doctor his leg which was all red and swelled up. The doctor said he could wait to see his primary care physician; it was cellulitis. I told him no, don't wait. It could turn into sepsis, a life threatening condition. He called the doctor back and told her what I said. The nurse assured him it was OK, "We'd never send you home with a life-threatening condition. You can wait until next week with your regular appointment with your primary care physician for an antibiotic." Fortunately he had to see the diabetic wound specialist at the hospital for his regular appointment the next day. He looked at his leg and told him it was not cellulitis, it was a bacterial infection and he needed antibiotics immediately. He also said most doctors misdiagnose it. I go by my gut at this point with doctors; I see them as infrequently as possible. Find another doctor if you don't trust him.

What exactly don't you trust about them, OP? Have they been careless, or recommended possibly unnecessary procedures? Or do they dismiss your concerns?

Have you got a second opinion from a different provider/specialist? I'll spare you all the personal stories, since others have covered that base quite well. Do you have a friend or relative to advocate for you when you're in the hospital? They say that's important, these days.

good questions: it will be interesting to see if OP gives you some answers to the questions? My policy has always been the same: don't like or trust the doctor, find another and usually asking others for referrals can help. Not always, sometimes your best friend will like a doctor you are not comfortable with, but usually it is a place to start.

Doctors in the US are plagued by the insurance companies, solicited by big pharma, and hamstrung by regulations from every side. We are not considered to "have the best health care in the world". Most drs disdain any form of natural medications- because this is what they're taught in med school.

In the below study, we rank 10th in the world:

I agree, today's doctors and maybe the doctors of old, didn't work to get the the "root" so much to work on the issue of the patients. For starters they don't have the time, and are not taught that in med schools. We have to do that to find out WHY this and that is happening or going on in our bodies.

I find the integrative MD's work to get to the root with the little time they spend with us also.

For many MD's it's not the trust so much as "they don't know". I went for 10 miserable years with what I thought was a sluggish thyroid and the MD's kept giving me that "your numbers are good mantra"....they treat by numbers. Many today just don't have the knowledge of the old time doctors who didn't work with numbers but with symptoms.

I know what you mean, and many times it feels like your jumping through hoops just to find someone
who will listen and help.

Many have said to get second opinions and/or find another doctor but that is not always easy. I've
had many referrals through friends as well as doctors but in all honesty some of them did not take
new patients, some took all my information and said they would call back (and I would ask if they
were accepting new patients in which they said they did) only to get a call back with "not at this
time or a flat - no," and others who shouldn't be practicing medicine.

This past week I have been trying to find another endocrinologist since I am not feeling well
and something is wrong. I can't see the one in my city since her first opening is in late February
and she is not very thorough so I called one of my previous doctors in another city who gave me
2 endocrinologists.
I called one and they took my information on the phone and said that they would call me back,
which they never did. So Monday, I called another endo. and told the appt. rep which doctor referred
me (he's very well known but not in the field I need) and they asked for a diagnosis.
I explained why I needed to see him which included the diagnosis and the woman said sorry that
is not a diagnosis. OK? So, I ask my GP and he tells me to tell them the same thing I said.
Has anyone ever heard of this?

I'm certain the larger the city one lives in the more resources. Endo MD's NEVER helped me, they were a waste of time but a great learning experience. I live in So. Cal and we have many integrative MD's and naturopaths and I've gone out of the conventional healing world as they have never helped me.

It's tragic so many suffer as they can't get MD's to get to the ROOT of their issues. I struggled long with that with a conventional MD for 10 yrs.
