I quite eleven years ago using the patch and it really was not that bad.I really think that you have to want to quite just likie anyone addicted to any thing.A year after I quite ;I had a lung Xray and test done on my lungs. The doctors said that I was lucky becuase my lungs looked normal and clear and my lung funstions tested good.It took me two years until I really noticed my sense of smell improve and now I can smell anyone who smokes by the smell of their clothing.I fell fortunate as I know peole who quite and years later the damage done did not clear and they have lung functioning problems as they got older.

When I stopped smoking, back in 1987, I thought the concensus was that the extra pounds you put on from putting down the cigarettes was less harmful than smoking? It is amazing how quickly the lungs will heal.

For me, it was easier to lose weight than to stop smoking, but when I became pregnant with my daughter in '87, I was able to quit and never picked it up again. I had been smoking almost 3 packs per day for roughly 10 years. I had quit cold turkey once before, but it only lasted then for about six months for some odd reason.

Believe it or not, I have never missed it, but like any habit, smoking a cigarette pops into my head at the oddest times -- like taking a cigarette break when I am painting a room, for example, or working in the yard. I'll think, "where did that come from?"

You rub the patch? That's funny.

Maybe that's like those little acupuncture buttons they put in your ears. You rub them when you need to stimulate the suppression of hunger, smoking, anxiety........

Exactly, TrudeyRose -- find something to do. I was amazed at the time I had on my hands, and felt like I'd go nuts.

If all else fails, run the vacuum cleaner. Better a threadbare carpet than the other, Girl. You go for it! and good luck!

So I would like to think that at least some of us smokers (current of otherwise) have some respect for non smokers and have given them the consideration they deserve by not puffin it up in public places.
Very well said!

Some people just like to jump on the ban smoking bandwagon. The truth is, at this point there's not a lot of smoking in public places. So the only places a non smoker is having a problem would be at home or maybe walking past a smoker on the street. I personally hate this mentality. I don't smoke around people who don't smoke. I definitely don't smoke around children.

But to answer the original post, the truth of the matter is it's a crap shoot either way. Statistically speaking, being overweight is much more dangerous than smoking. The number of potentially fatal diseases that derive from being overweight are many (diabetes, heart disease etc.) . That's why being overweight is the number 1 cause of death in this country (it's really heart disease but that can be a symptom of being overweight). I also, just read an article that linked cancer to being overweight. Smoking is not an acceptable way to diet either, even though it CAN cause Cancer, there are many people who pass away from Cancer that have never smoked a day in their lives. But unless you're pyschic you don't know what group you'll fall into until it's too late. So I guess if I HAD to choose between the 2 I'd pick smoking. It's the lesser of two evils. With being overweight it's really a matter of time as far as getting sick. With smoking you will most likely get sick, but it's not a guarantee. Despite what non smokers tell you. But I am trying to quit as well. They say in order to do so you have to replace the habit. The last time I did it with exercise and never looked better. I plan to do that again, but withdrawal is no joke.

I wouldn't say obesity is worse than smoking. With smoking, you can get emphysema and lung cancer and die. A long slow painful death I hear. I have personally known 4 people that have died that way. Not pretty.
As for obesity, sure, with being morbidly obese, your chances of getting heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc are higher, but there are also plenty of morbidly obese people that live a long time just the way they are.
They aren't blowing secondhand smoke on anyone either.

I've been through the withdrawal of smoking..as i quit cold turkey 11 years ago. It was one of the most excruciating painful(as in mental)experiences i went through. But i stuck it out, even with super intense cigarette cravings and i will never go back to it. It's amazing the way you feel after being off cigarettes for just 6 months. Even better after 1 year. Gets better and better with each passing year. Just take it one day at a time. Reward yourself frequently.
And then you find out you can taste foods again, some things you loved before you now hate with a passion. Especially salty and greasy foods. They make me gag now.
And you can smell smokers as they walk by, whereas before you couldn't. On the plus side, you can smell flowers again.
Good luck to those quitting. You will succeed and survive it.
