I went to the doctor today for eye discharge and a sore ear (been going on several weeks). She told me it was congestion (I didn't even realize I was congested but I am having a ton of allergies but my nose never runs). Her advice was flonase, sinus irrigation, eye wash and warm packs.
I went to the store and got a sinus irrigation thing. I got the bottle, not the Neti pot. I followed the directions and doing it wasnt quite as horrible as I thought it would be. But the after effects! Ugh!
It took hours for junk to stop dripping down my throat or suddenly leak out of my nose...fun
It felt like I got punched in the face...bad sinus head ache, even my teeth hurt. Its easing up, but 5 hours later.
I felt unwell. Maybe it was in my head, but for a few hours, I just felt sick. A lot of nausea, I think from swallowing the salt water.
I really didn't like it.
On the positive side, my eye has stopped having much discharge (which is gross if you think my eye was leaking snot). It was only in the eye that I can breathe out of. So gross...but I am still awfully happy its stopped! My ear is about the same but the doc said it might take several washes for that.
So I am wondering if this is normal? Will it get better if I keep doing it (I am supposed to do it twice a day)? Any other suggestions to help?
Sounds like maybe you opened the floodgates for what was already lurking up there. The only time I've had something similar happen is when I had a truly awful sinus infection.
Don't swallow the water!
I think it's easy to overdo the water pressure with a squeeze bottle, as compared to a pot, which works just on gravity.

Im not trying to swallow the water. I just have a lot of post nasal drip going on. Should I go get the neti pot instead? The bottle looked more efficient.
I didn't have any matter come out that looked infected. Actually, less junk came out then I expected. It was all clear.
I switched to the Netti Rinse Bottle several years ago, best decision ever made. My allergy doc recommended it. Said to add 5 drops of mild baby shampoo into the bottle with warm water. Warm water does not have the shock value as cold water.
If you're continuing a lot of draining afterwards that means you have a ton of junk up there in the sinus cavity. Eventually after several rinses you will feel better.
Netti pot runs all over your face and is a mess. Rinse bottle goes into the nose and forces the gunk out.

I've heard really good things about the neti pot.
But I haven't tried it - it sounds kinda gross.
A neti pot is very gentle and the feeling does take a little getting used to but gets more natural pretty fast.
I use room temperature bottled water with 1/4 tsp. kosher salt and 1/8 tsp. baking soda - 16 oz. of water. I don't usually need all that water but unless I'm planning another session in a few hours I don't want it to set around.
I don't use more than daily at the most but you may want to until you get things cleared up initially. I've read that it's not good to do too often as it flushes out all the good bacteria and can dry out the sinuses.
Twice a day for about 8 years now. I use the bottle, make sure and replace every couple months, and it's truly a godsend. My sinuses have always given me trouble, and a busted up nose makes the passages in there not so straight.
I used to get one or two colds a year and I haven't gotten sick during the time I've used the netti bottle. Not saying I couldn't still but it has been a clear difference.

I use the bottle and it's great. You are probably nauseous from all the mucus going into your stomach.
Your infection sounds pretty bad (out your eye?!!), I would go back to doc if that continues too long.
