I have a friend who has an 11month old granddaughter. She just found out that the baby has pneumonia and is on antibiotics, steroids and albuterol. I found this really scary but then I don't have children. I didn't want to ask a lot of questions but was wondering how often does this happen to babies and is this year a bad year for things like pneumonia? The baby is in daycare. (where I work there have been 2 people, older, who have had pneumonia)
My girlfriend's month-old grandson is also hospitalized with pneumonia at the moment. He does not go to daycare, and his parents have been very strict about visitors who are not up to date on vaccinations or who might have colds. My girlfriend's husband, a doctor, has made numerous trips to the hospital to check in on the baby and his treatment, but hasn't been overly worried about the baby's prognosis. It's scary, and unfortunate, but modern medicine being what it is, the baby should be just fine.
My daughter had pneumonia as an infant around 3mths old, again around 12mths and then 2x in kindergarten. Her lungs were weakened by the first bout when she was a baby. Luckily after kindergarten she has kicked it for good and has hardly been sick since. She's in 7th grade now.
Thanks for the replies and info. Good to know all of this.
