I use the breath holding technique and that usually works. It may need to be repeated several times.

I have done the drinking upside down trick. I would use that method if the breath holding method didn't work.

By the time I do all that, the hiccups usually go away.

Tip your head forward as far as you can, and drink a glass of water upside-down.

All of these work by forcing you to concentrate on something different, either because they are difficult, like drinking water upside down, or has a strong pucker factor, like the sugar, the lemon juice, and the pickled sausage juice (ugh). So you could insert anything that requires a lot of concentration or causes distraction and it would likely work equally well.

I usually just eat a piece of bread, or some crackers. Anything dry and bland usually works for me.

Another trick is to concentrate, and wait for the next hiccup. If you do it correctly and concentrate hard enough, it won't come.

Take a deep breath, hold your nose, and swallow 7 sips of water. Works like a charm!

I just hold my breath as long as I can. Sometimes I can do slow, controlled breathing, but it doesn't always work for me anymore.

If all else fails, my husband sneaks up on me and yells BOO!, and that usually works.

Old bar trick -- put a few drops of bitters on a lime wedge and bite down on the lime.

Spread your thumb at 90 degrees to the palm, so that webbing expands. Hand flat. Take index and thumb fingers of the opposite hand and shape them into C. Start squeezing webbing till you find a very painful spot. It's quite easy. After you found it, squeeze firmly, not to pain, for 5 seconds, release for 5 seconds and do this for about a minute. Fixes mild hiccups.
If this did not work, run tip of middle finger (index, whatever, middle is simply wide tipped) on the rib cage edge, towards where about spleen is. You will find another painful spot. Do same you did with thumb webbing, this time only with one finger tip. This helps with strong hiccups.
There is more powerful spot on the back, but it is virtually impossible to reach with one's hand, so someone else has to do it.

There's really no trick needed. If you understand why you are having hiccups, then blowing in and out of a small bag (rebreathing your own CO2) makes perfect sense. A paper bag is not a must. I've done it with a small ziplock and a good seal around the mouth.
