You toss and turn and even figure it’s your pillow’s fault that you can’t sleep. Boy have I ever been there!

But what if it’s something you did before you went to bed that’s keeping you up? I've started stretching before bed and that's helped a bunch, but there are some additional things that might help you too.

Run through this list of nighttime no-no’s to make sure you always have a good night’s sleep.

1. Your electronic device:

The light from your phone, TV, or e-reader can keep your body from producing melatonin. This is what makes you sleepy. Either unplug before you start getting ready for bed or turn down the brightness on your screen.

2. Coffee

Caffeine stays in your system for almost 12 hours, so avoid it late in the day. If you really want that nightcap, go for an herbal tea or a type of coffee that includes sleep-promoting herbs.

3. Your medication

Check the instructions on any daily medications and supplements for the best time to take them. Some medications keep you alert after you take them and shouldn’t be taken right before bed.

4. Tea

Be careful with caffeinated tea near bedtime. Go for herbal or chamomile. If you want your favorite caffeinated tea, make a cup then reuse the teabag. The caffeine won’t be so concentrated in the second cup.

Use these tips to always get a good night’s sleep. Happy sleeping!

I have computer glasses that block blue light, and I wear them for an hour or two before bed. That way I can still watch TV or futz around on City-Data. The retailer I bought them from makes both regular glasses and a fit-over version, which can be worn over prescription glasses.

Or pull out Team of Rivals. For 20 years I have had horrible insomnia. Now that my oldest is 18 and graduated high school,my sleep is dramatically improved. You'd think it would be the reverse. Go figure.
