Pepcid and Zantac are H2 blockers. Protonix is a proton pump inhibitor. Both help with acid reflux, but H2 blockers are actually blocking the release of histamine in the stomach, and are commonly prescribed for people with hives. My daughter takes antihistamines and a H2 blocker for cholinergic urticaria. The antihistamine alone doesn't provide the relief that the combination provides. Her allergist has her taking Zyrtec and Pepcid twice a day. It doesn't prevent the hives but the hives aren't as severe and she can lay in her bed without getting hives on the side of her body touching the mattress, which is a big improvement.

My mom is using the Pepcid and it really helped last night. Very little itching and she actually slept. Thanks so much!!!!! Still waiting on results from her rheumatologist.
Update: one test result came back from the rheumatologist she tested very high for celliacs disease. the range should be no higher than 19 and she was at 40. Went back to the dermatologist and she definitely has Urticaria.Waiting on further test results once the rheumatologist gets back from vacation, she also had a skin biopsy today and we go back next week for those results.

Urticaria just means hives, so there will be a cause of her urticaria which needs to be identified, or if the cause can't be identified and she keeps getting hives, chronic idiopathic urticaria.
I'm glad the Pepcid helped. If she's going to take it often, along with the Zyrtec, Sam's club store brand is much more affordable than the name brand.
Interesting, I have a friend who is celiac, and she always has chronic hives. I think celiacs have trouble with other things in their diet and probably have to eliminate more than just gluten.
Went back to doctor with my mom for another skin Biopsy today. One of her test results from the rheumatologist said her sodium was low. She is taking measures to do something about that. The dermatologist does not think she has lupus neither does the rheumatologist. Both are suggesting an allergist now. She plans to go next week. She still has chronic hives and the itching is so bad.
