I am heading to Kenya next month and need to get Malaria tabs. I already know the type since I got them last year when I went to South Africa. I don't want to visit the doc as it is a total scam, guy says Hi How are you, here is the prescription, happy travels and then bills $100 for his 2 minutes of "consultation" which is ludicrous as I am not actually going to the doc for any illness and I already know what tablets I need.

My insurance does not cover doctor visits for free as I have a high deductible policy. Any way to get prescriptions without visiting the doc?

That's a good question when you get the answer let me know. What I would do for starters is google: alternative malaria medicine. Can't hurt. Otherwise bite the bullet.

Are you looking for Malarone? If you just search Malarone without a prescription on Google, a bunch of sites pop up.

However, usually those sites that provide you with the meds without a script charge twice as much for the medication itself, so it may not save you any money. I know your insurance doesn't cover your doctor's visit, but if it covers the drug itself it still may be less expensive than getting it online without a script.

Can't you call the pharmacy where you got the meds last year and ask for a renewal? Usually they call the doc and he authorizes it and you don't have to go in to see him. If it's been more than a year, it usually doesn't matter. A nice doctor will go ahead and auth it , especially if he knows you.

If the OP's attitude towards his doctor showed during his visit, the doc is not likely to authorize anything without seeing him. It's also likely he hasn't seen him since last year. Another red-flag to the doc.

Doesn't your doctor have a phone? Or email?

Yeah, this is another reason to have a decent relationship with your PCP. I know I could have just called mine and asked them and they would have emailed in the script. No office charge.

I asked the doc and he wrote me a prescription without charging me. However I paid through the friggin nose for the drugs at CVS. Why are medications so expensive here in the US? The anti malaria drug is called Mefloquine and CVS charged me $9 per tablet, insanity. It should be more like 25 cents, it's a generic not even branded. WTF is wrong with health care in this country? This is not a drug to cure cancer, it's a generic run of the mill patent expired drug being peddled for 10,000% profit.

Why didn't you call around for prices before you filled it? Not all pharmacies charge the same for Rx

There are potential side effects to every prescription written. Whether or not you may have one of these side effects may depend on your medical history. Only a physician can really determine whether or not your history puts you at risk for side effects. There are other issues too. Malaria pills are an antibiotic. We have issues with bacteria becoming more and more resistant to antibiotics. If we allowed anyone who wanted too to take an antibiotic for any reason, we'd soon destroy any ability these drugs had to fight infectious disease.

You might contact your local health department. Some health departments still operate a clinic for people traveling to foreign countries. This clinic can get you the vaccinations and medicines you need to be as safe as possible. However, many health departments have discontinued this clinic and now send people to private physicians for this kind of thing.

Ultimately though, you'll need a medical visit to get these prescriptions. That's the way it should be. How much are you paying for your trip to Kenya? Four thousand dollars? It makes a $100 doctor visit look cheap in comparison.
