I think it should be made very clear in all aspects who is behind the research papers. I also think media should be held to a higher standard the sensationalizing a narrow aspect of studies (headlines are frequently misleading).

Authors must disclose potential conflicts of interest.

Such a disclosure does not mean that the research should be tossed out. The key word is "potential". Each study should be judged on its merits, not solely on the source of funding.
