I have a woman friend that has two bumps in her neck which is Thyroid glands. Her doctor wants two remove one or even both glands. She is 65 years old. If she has them removed will she have to take pills the rest of her life and does it make her have less energy? She loves to work in her garden everyday.
Yes, if her thyroid gland is removed, she will have to take thyroid hormone pills for the rest of her life. If the dosage is adjusted properly, her energy levels should be fine.
Have the thyroid nodules been biopsied? That would be a good first step.
My mother had her thyroid gland removed when she was in her early 20s. She lived in Germany and it was done there. She took thyroid supplementation for the rest of her life and had more energy than all her kids combined. She was a realtor and worked a full schedule, showing houses, closing deals, etc until she was in her late 80s. She lived to be a healthy 98 years old.
I still my have my thyroid but it might as well be gone - it's basically useless at this point. I'll have to take pills for the rest of my life but it's not a big deal. I have just as much energy as anyone else. I've been on meds since 1982 . . . one pill a day. Plus they're really cheap - I pay $3.00 every ninety days at Walmart.

Yes and gave blood today for another test. She was worried about Cancer in the glands.
I have a friend who had most of her thyroid removed and it was due to calcium deposits on the thyroid. She regrets so much of what she listened to from her doctor. She questioned nothing. She's lost a lot of her voice and yes takes thyroid meds. I'm on thyroid support (desiccated) since 2002 and have my thyroid...MANY need meds regardless to support their sluggish thyroids.
I would get a couple other opinions before having them take out the thyroid...don't go with one Md.
I sent you a message on rep, about does your friend "suck" on Tums, this is what my friend believes caused the calcium deposits and did this because her MD said OK to use Tums like she did, a LOT.

The thyroid replacement pills are small and inexpensive. But, yeah, forever.
The surgery is pretty fast and simple, just a short hospital stay (1 or 2 nights).
