Washing with soap and water with a washcloth only slides over all the dirt a person picks up on their skin. I know that because I went in a sauna recently and scratched my skin with my fingernails and the results were all that the soap and water were believed to have taken off. Try it and you will see. There has to be a way to get all that dirt and grime off a persons skin without wasting ones time on soap and water.

Surface dirt does come off with normal bathing. What you were scratching off was dead skin. Removing dead skin takes a bit of abrasion like scratching, using a loofah, etc.

It is not healthy to scrub your skin all the time. Exfoliating which is what you were doing removes the dead skin and should only be done once a week at the most. Also do not use harsh soaps on your skin.

no, you are not still dirty after using soap and water, with or without using a washcloth, which BTW I rarely use. What appears to be deep seated dirt is dead skin and there is a reason it is still there. too much removal makes you much more prone to infection if you get a cut. Leave that dead skin alone.

MDs have told me to use soap and water for cuts, explaining that alcohol does more harm than good around broken skin.

That was dead skin cells.

People did used to clean themselves w/out soap and water. The Greeks and Romans covered themselves with olive oil and then scraped off the oil, grime, and dead skin with a strigil. Like traditional Japanese, they cleaned themselves before they got into the water, and for the same reason - when you're sharing the hot water, you need to get clean first.

Doesn't matter what you clean yourself with, you still have to get those dead skin cells off if you want smooth skin. That's why people use terrycloth washcloths and loofas, not to mention terrycloth towels.

Most people don't come in contact with real toxicities that often to have to worry.

However, if you do have a chemical, such as bug spray etc., one theory I learned when working with fiberglass was never use warm or hot water to rinse off the skin for the first rinsing, as those can open up the skin pores.

Some people immediately start trying to rub whatever undesirables are on the skin, off, under the running warm water, which could push it into the open pores.

If concerned with what foreign matter is on top, one should always rinse off with cold water first to close them and continue lightly skimming the skin, no rubbing, even if it was in liquid form, till the foreign matter is off, then continue as usual with warm water.
