I had a tib-fib (at the ankle) fracture last February, and needed a plate and screws on one side, and a long nail on the other. I am having the hardware removed soon, and was wondering if others have experience with this?

I know it's a short surgery. Just wondering if people needed crutches after for a bit, or whether they could bear weight the next day. I am taking 2 days off of work -- I think that should be more than enough?

I know my surgeon will give me instructions, but I am interested in others' experiences.

My brother fx his tibia skiing and had the plate placed after the attempt at casting didn't union correctly. I don't recall the details of his post op but I wanted to let you know that that leg is strong and he's been running, skiing, biking, etc as much as ever. No residual affects.

My physical therapist told me hardware is rarely removed in the States but that is routine in Europe. I had a steel rod hammered down my broken tibia and a bunch of plates and screws put in both ankles after I fell and broke both legs in August. Nobody has said anything to be about removing anything. Don't you think they would have by now if it is routine or even needs to be done in my case? I'm healing well and walking some on my walker now.

My ortho said that the hardware can stay in forever. Some people do fine with it remaining, and others don't. I was having pain off and on where the hardware was, so he removed it. And to be honest, since we hit out family out of pocket max due to my broken ankle and my husband's broken wrist this year, I wanted it done before 2018, if I was going to get it done.

It's something between the patient and the provider I guess.
