Dairy causing mucus has been debunked. And yes, during a cold your body is trying to get rid of the virus. If you can let the mucous out as opposed to drying it up you may have a reduction in the time you are ill. But its hard to sleep when that is happening so most of us need to plug ourselves up.

There was just a commentary this morning on the dairy industry and how humans have been sold a bill of goods on drinking milks particularly vs adult animals in our world. Got Milk, that sold a lot of milk.
When you have a bad cold, mucus appears in your nose and throat and starts to run out your nose.
Is the immune system generally trying to expel the virus from your body or is it trying expel lots of other things from your body?
Doesn't the mucus cause more discomfort and coughing than the virus itself would cause?
The coughing during a cold is purely caused by increased mucus, is that right?
Bluedevilz posted a good article summarizing the goods, bads and uglies of mucus, but basically mucus serves as a lubricant, and protective agent against microorganisms, pollen and other particles in the air that you breathe in. And coughing is a mechanism used to rid the respiratory tract of offending particles, and other substances that might harm an individual. Although mucus production and coughing can be excessive and annoying at times, they're part of the body's innate immune system and we'd all be in a sorry pickle without them.
Yes...when you have a "bug", your body is trying to expel the irritant....you produce mucus in normal amounts all the time, but when you catch a virus or any germ, your body will do it's best to get rid of it! And yes...the coughing and runny nose is a pain...

That still does not prove that dairy causes mucus.

My physician told me to stop drinking milk to improve my allergies, which cause a lot of mucus.
