Need to be careful here. There are 3 drugs used for macular degeneration. Avastin is a standard cancer treatment and is relatively cheap...about $50 for the drug. The other two are around $1800 but do not appear any more effective than Avastin.

Avastin, at approximately $50 per average treatment, is significantly less expensive for the patient than the alternatives (~$1,800 for Eylea and ~$2,000 for Lucentis).

For TEN YEARS I have gotten injections in both eyes every 4-6 weeks. I honestly don't know which drug(s) I get now as we have switched up several times. Either Avastin or Eylea and sometimes one drug in one eye and the other in the other eye. Wet macular degeneration dx at age 61 and my doc told me I was the youngest by 10 years of any of his patients. No family history either.
I honestly don't pay too much to the cost as Medicare and BSBC/Fed pay for the lion's share. But each visit, which includes some fancy photography costs between $4,000 and $5000. The doc, techs, equipment costs, etc get a big hunk but he told me the drugs were in R&D for 15 years before going on the market and that is why they are so expensive.
I feel very fortunate to still have my sight. It was not that long ago patients with wet macular degeneration were just sent home and they went blind. Doc told me I will probably get injections for the rest of my life but much progreess has been made into finding rx which would require injections every 6 months.
We are lucky to have the option to retain our eyesight, my mom had Macular degeneration and basically went blind by the time she was 90 i keep wondering if she was given the option of eye shots to stave off the progressing blindness, she died in 2015 so they must have had drugs to combat MD at that time.
Even with the monthly eye shots of avastin the macular degeneration is now advancing to the point i'm having trouble reading. Looking like my days on the computer are numbered if improvement doesnt take place.

Absolutely not. There is plenty of software that will keep you using the computer even if you were to lose your sight entirely. JAWS is one piece of software that does text-to-speech functions. You just have to access it, install it, and learn how to use it. I know a lot of visually impaired folks, including some who are totally blind, who use computers.
Some of you are comparatively lucky. I have no idea what the shots consist of but two friends of mine go weekly
Weekly sounds a bit extreme, the shots consist of a drug called Avastin that is injected into the eye to curb the bleeding of the eyes macular lining, not sure i'd call myself lucky to have to undergo this treatment for the rest of my life.
I'm still having shots in my left eye only. Doctor said it could last three years.
