Hi,

I can't spend much time here because I am sick today. I have flu but I could barely sleep with a terrible throat ache. I know is not a severe condition but I am feeling bad everytime I swallow. What can I do to relieve this pain?

Thank you in advance.

You might try some pain reliever, e.g. Tylenol or ibuprofen, for general pain relief. For the throat specifically, tea or even hot water (if you don't like tea) with lots of honey. Sometimes cough drops, which don't really do much for a cough, help a throat.

Cepacol and Sucrets both have a numbing effect. They are the only syrups or cough drops that really take that edge off for me. Hoping you feel better soon Jorge ChemE.

I find using a combination of a OTC pain reliever (Tylenol, aspirin, iboprofen, whatever you happen to prefer) and a soothing non-medicated throat drop (Riccola, Fisherman's Friend, other herbals) helps the most. A non-medicated throat drop can be used as needed, when needed. Medicated drops have dosage restrictions for obvious reasons, but I find that they don't seem to last until the next allowed dose. Sipping hot liquid soothes because of the warmth. If its caffeine-free you can drink it whenever.

Zinc lozenges? I had a history of sore throats many years ago. You will get better.

Unless you have strep, your throat is likely hurting (at least partly) from post nasal drip. Gargling with warm salt water and irrigating/cleansing your nasal passages with a saline solution (either neti pot or OTC spray) will help with this.

You probably also have some inflammation from the infection. Sure it can be managed a bit with pain meds but continuous hot (herbal) teas, such as ginger, will really help with the soreness and inflammation.

Beyond that, on a topical level, sucking on zinc lozenges is a good idea but make sure you only use the suggested dose. You CAN over do it with zinc.

Clob soda stings but then numbs your throat. Safe to use whenever.

Great advice. The OP can gargle with salt water and use sinus rinse a few times a day, which should help a lot with the post-nasal drip.

I’ve found that Sucrets is the best cough drop to help with numbing your throat from the pain and it will help with cough as well, but it can’t be used that often. Olbas pastilles are also apparently super popular with singers to sooth sore throats, and I’ve found that they are excellent and worth the extra cost (although check around online as some places will gouge you).

I always liked to gargle with Coke or Pepsi. Probably any carbonated soda would do?
