Almost Everyone? I never had them until the surgery work in the last 7 yrs and I'll go back to hip replacement and then the subsequent other types and nerve damage that has followed.
They are still pretty common.

I had a couple "jerks" last night and they were before I feel asleep I think. Did your husband go thru some surgeries, I believe these are from nerve damages.
I slept horribly during my marriage due to my former husband's snoring (the sleep apnea choking roar-type snore). I used to avoid vacations with him as there was nowhere short of dragging a pillow and blanket to the hotel lobby to escape the racket; I'd always return to work exhausted and cranky due to extreme sleep deprivation.
These days, I sleep well alone--especially after a few hours of swimming or gardening after work. That being said, I love cuddling up with my current partner when he's here. No matter how large the bed is, we always end up spooned together in one section of the bed. He says that he sleeps better, too, when we're together at night.

Hypnic jerks, read this link. Theories as usual and my theory still stands as I never had these before the surgeries from 2010. And then again in 2017 for knee clean out. Nerves are damaged.
Ah, more theories and drugs and surgeries mentioned here. I know my body pretty well and what it's been thru.
What is happening more in my right leg since the "clean out" in 2017, I get a tingling and burning down the front of leg (shins) and believe this is since the arthroscopic clean out. I have it right now.

Oh I just posted a link that says they can be due to surgery and medications.
Now who is right, all the experts speaking out there. I'll go with I believe and what my body believes.
Mikala posted the same link you just did, T.L. I live with plenty of nerve damage from the surgeries. Why can't my personal theory be correct? Good grief.
I think the "jerk" issue is being worn out, whomever cares can read the couple of links posted and make their own conclusions. Now if bluedevil wants to say more, I'll read that one too.
