Anyone know what this is and what the Dr does about it? We think it's some sciatica and/or femoral issue. They'll start with an MRI I think. TIA.
Brief back story: Fiance's done warehousing work for years in which he's had the usual aches and pains. He stopped warehousing up until about 3-4 yrs ago. Then about every 4-6 mos, he'd get this lower back pain and lasted about 4-6 days.
Currently: A few weeks ago, he got his usual back pain, but then, for the 1st time, after the back pain was over in a few days, the pain went down to only his R leg. He called his Dr who gave 600mg of ibuprofen and that's helped most of the time. Walking for a good 40-60 min helps the most and he feels pretty good for about the next 5 hrs afterward. Epsom bath soaks have helped. It's when he's not in motion that it starts to hurt more.
The (R side only) pain's mostly when getting up from the sitting position in his:
- shin and right of shin
- right side of knee and behind knee
- thigh up to hip
- R side of hip
- muscle on top front part of thigh where body folds where waist meets thigh
- nerve on high part of butt cheek
It feels like mild pinched nerve pain with severe muscle ache and strain. (Never tingling or numbing.)
He would have been back to the Dr by now, but worried with COVID. He doesn't want to tk a COVID test like some Drs are wanting. But, he'll have to see about this soon.
It really should be evaluated by a doctor as it could be many things from a muscle issue to a pinched nerve to a slipped disc.
When I had similar problems, it started with x-rays and PT, then to MRI to eventually surgery. Many years passed between the first x-rays to surgery and there were at least two or three MRI's.
I would suggest looking up some lower back stretches/exercises that can help ease the pain. The "Happy Baby" yoga pose helps me, as do some others.
I'm a nurse not a doctor, but I recommend finding a good chiropractor (usually done through word of mouth to avoid a money-grubbing quack). I've had sciatica and lower back pain for years and a monthly adjustment is the only thing which has kept me relatively pain-free in between. I agree with stretching, yoga etc also. I do believe back surgery should be avoided if at all possible, since it seems to cause more problems than it heals.

Load-bearing hurts most. Muscle around thigh tightens and cramps up because of weakness in joints and other muscles. He's getting hip flexor pain and probably occasional groin pulls as well. It could also be a stress fracture which can get worse without rest. Physical therapy and weight training would help.
Your description is classic sciatica from degenerative disc disease.
Sure sounds like this to me too. Sitting is one of the worst things for it.
Strengthening core, keeping weight low and daily stretching should help a bit.
I’d avoid the Ibuprofen when possible.
Not a doctor. Has he tried Voltaren gel? My mom swears by it for joint pain. It's a NSAID, so you have to be careful about using it when you're taking ibuprofen. It was prescription only until recently, now it's over the counter. My daughter uses it for costochondritis, says it stinks but it helps.
OP similar thing happened to me a few years ago. Had an MRI which showed 3 degenerated discs in the lower right side of back resulting in severe sciatic nerve pain. Went a back specialist and he did a RFA procedure (radio frequency ablation) which deadens those nerves. It eliminated the pain immediately.
You should see your doc asap before it gets any worse.

Post your insurance information then upload CT and XRays for DX
Thanks guys. He's been going walking pretty much daily lately because that helps him feel better. He hasn't taken any x-rays or anything yet, but he should do something soon.
