So, according to this article, the 8.5 hrs is the new 8 hrs.

The article itself has been making the rounds between various news outlets. I'm sure you've seen it...
But... here's the issue I have with that article. The math doesn't quite add up.
So, I wake up at 6:30. Out of the house by 7:30. At work by 8:45. Back home by 6:30. That's already 12 hrs.
At home, eat, watch TV, relax, shop a little, talk with wife, visit friends, entertain friends visiting, do other stuff around the house. By this rationale, to wake up at 6:30 the next day and get 8.5 hrs, I need to be sleeping at 10 PM. That leaves exactly 3.5 hrs to do all I need to do at home. Of course I don't do all those things on a daily basis. Thankfully wife doesn't work and she does the cooking. If we both worked, making dinner after a long day at work just takes time away from other things.
Now this is the life of a married guy with no kids. Adding kids to that equation makes things quite dicey. So... what's a scenario here under which I am able to have some kind of life, and get this highly recommended 8.5 hrs?
Thoughts?
