This thing is driving me crazy. I'm a fairly athletic senior female.

I run 20 miles a week, for example.

I never paid much attention to the heart aspect of my IWatch but now I am obcessed with it. It will be going along fine with resting rate in the 60's - then all of a sudden I will get a 40.
No symptoms at all - feel great.
Anyone else have one of these - how are your readings?
Thanks.

I am 52, female, not a runner, but I do cardio 4x week and weight train 2x week.

My resting heartbeat is 60-62 as I drift off to sleep. 67 now as I type (typical) and 70-80's if I'm moving around letting the dog out, loading the dishwasher etc.

There are time when I have checked and found that, per Fitbit, I presently have no heartbeat. However, I have checked and I am still alive, so I have concluded there was a glitch in the device, not me.

I have noticed that when I'm on doing cardio (elliptical or rowing machine) the Fitbit can be affected by heavy sweat or by wrist position (compared to the reading I'm getting on the exercise equipment) The manufacturer recommends wearing it snug two finger widths above the wrist to maintain contact. This does seem to improve the readings.

Also, I had read somewhere, perhaps Fitbit, that some people have a tendon positioned in their wrist in such a way that it lifts the sensor off the skin when the wrist flexes. Maybe a very flexible wrist band would help.

I would think that if you heart rate were suddenly dropping to 40 bpm and then returning to 60, that you'd feel something so I tend to think it's the device. However, if I had that plus lightheadedness or confusion with it, I'd see a doctor about getting a 24 hour holter monitor.

Considering how many reports and studies have shown that these devices are not as accurate all the time as one would think, how they can have fluctuating readings due to nothing having to do with your actual physical body and are prone to hiccups, I'm surprised people still obsess over a clearly faulty reading.

The HR monitors with a band across your chest and a readout on a watch-like device are more accurate.
Consumer Reports tested the Fitbit a couple of years ago:
