Problems with R. ankle--see a podiatrist? Or "sports medicine" Dr.? (pain, surgery)

I've been having an intermittent problem with my R. ankle for years: Occasionally, at night, or early A.M., my R. ankle kind of "pops", & then "locks up", like it's out of joint or something. This almost always happens when I'm laying down in bed. The pain is fairly severe. The only thing that seems to work is if I stand up--also painful--& after a few minutes it subsides.
Recently I got a cheap Ace ankle support, & it seems to help, some--my ankle hasn't done that nearly as much. Wondering if I should see a podiatrist, or "sports medicine" Dr.? Or maybe either one could be helpful? However I also have some back issues, & maybe a sports medicine Dr. could also help with that.
If you have soft tissue issues with your foot, start with a podiatrist. If, however, you have what you think are likely musculoskeletal problems with your foot, you should ideally see an Orthopedic Surgeon fellowship trained in Foot and Ankle. You could see a Sports Medicine physician or even general Orthopedic Surgeon as well and then go from there if you need to.

Just hearing Dr. Darrow for his Sunday program on PRP/Stem Cells, I get more convinced with months that this work does the job so often. Many sports medicine MD's are now doing PRP and some doing Stem Cells. I'm making an appt soon with a sports ortho MD soon as he does PRP. So often as Dr. Darrow says we get all messed up while sleeping. I have a messed up right foot, long story on my issue, my whole right side is messed up. Lots of arthritis in my case.
Oh you might think of sleeping with the ankle support now and then. Just a thought. I've found a good one and will send you a picture of it later.

(Or: maybe 1st buy a better ankle support?)
TIA.....
Find an orthopedic surgeon that specializes in foot and ankle only.
MrsM worked for one of the best ortho foot guys in the country 10 years ago. A lot of his practice was fixing feet that podiatrists messed up

My husband is Ortho Foot and Ankle as well, and also spends a fair amount of time doing revisions of work done by podiatrists. I would personally only consider letting a podiatrist perform surgery on me if I lived in a community that lacked an Ortho F&A specialist and even then, only if it was toe/forefoot. That said, my husband has recommended a couple of podiatrists that he has strong referral relationships with to me for soft tissue issues, and they have been very good.

I have another thought re-reading your issue. And since I have a foot, knee (whole right side mess) that if I sleep all twisted up things are a lot worse for me. I have to make a conscious effort not to sleep twisted or I'll pay....I deal with arthritis also. But you might hear something by talking to ortho type doc.
Does the OP participate in any sports? If so then a sports med orthopedist would be a good choice. So many drs cant seem to understand the stress that sports put on certain joints and how the joint responds and how to make it better. And if the patient isnt interested in giving the activity up.
