Some of the symptoms are similar to Guillain-Barre syndrome, which also can be triggered by a virus or a vaccine. When my son got it, he was also treated by IVIG.

The presentation of Guillain-Barré is different.
The title of this article is misleading. Only poliovirus causes polio. The rest of it is pretty good.
"AFM differs from more common viral neuropathies such as transverse myelitis and Guillain-Barré. Transverse myelitis has deficits in both motor and sensory function at the affected spinal levels while Guillain-Barré is typically symmetric and ascending in its motor and sensory impairment."
I read an article earlier today that said all the kids had been tested for polio and do not have it.
I'm on my phone visiting someone in a hospital so I can't verify that right now.
Found in 22 states. Still considered rare. It is not a new disease but there has been an uptick in cases. Cause unknown but West Nile and polio are leading the list. Vaccinate against polio and try not to be bitten by a mosquito.

From my link: "Media reports in recent weeks have suggested that a "polio-like virus" might be triggering the condition, elevating fears that it might be polio itself. ... "Right now, we know that poliovirus is not the cause of these AFM cases," Messonnier said. ... She said that CDC has tested every stool specimen from AFM patients. None have tested positive for poliovirus. She also said West Nile virus hasn't been linked to any of these cases, either."
Don't fearmonger. Yes, everyone should get the polio vaccine and everyone should practice mosquito avoidance.

NOT POLIO!!!!!

Oh for Chrissakes ... That poster was quoting straight off the CDC website:
Quote:
Certain viruses that can cause AFM or similar neurologic conditions are
-poliovirus and non-polio enteroviruses,
-West Nile virus (WNV) and viruses in the same family as WNV, specifically Japanese encephalitis virus and -Saint Louis encephalitis virus, and
-adenoviruses.https://www.cdc.gov/acute-flaccid-my...about-afm.html
You ARE correct; that so far; none of these cases have tested positive for Poliovirus. And as soon as the CDC does find out what these cases are positive for; they will be able to clear this up rather quickly. Right?
To my knowledge; none of the cases in the US starting from the 2014 outbreak; have tested positive for Poliovirus but the reality for the rest of the world is; that many times they do test positive for Poliovirus.
I hope you understand that by leaving it at that; I am being a very, very well behaved CD poster & I'm doing so; out of respect for the need to not "fearmonger" right now.
