There are two vaccine against meningitis. One that protects against group A, C, Y and W-135. And another one that protects against strain B, the most dangerous. I had the first vaccine called Menactra, but I haven't gotten the one against the B strain. Most people aren't even vaccinated against the first one. Both are expensive and insurance won't cover unless you fall within the risk group, which are kids between 16 and 25. And of course, babies and children. Each vaccine costs around $250-300

Babies get it usually from stupid people who kiss them and that's how they pass this bacteria and since their immune system isn't developed, is game over for most of them.

Turns out, even with the B strain vaccine, it doesn't protect against all B strains and you can still get infected. These two vaccines will give you maybe 90-95% protection. The best protection is to never share cups and utensils. Never kiss random strangers. That's why it happens mostly in dorm rooms. People sharing the same stuff all the time.

Some people carry this bacteria in their throats and it doesn't affect them.

This guy was vaccinated against the B strain, but he caught a B strain that the vaccine did not protect against. It's so sad and unfortunate, that something as simple as he drinking from the same cup some of his dorm room buddies used, is what changed his whole life forever.
