So I been taking medication for schizo-effective for two years now, lithium and Clozapine. I noticed when I try to study for lets say math, I look at a formula and I have to review it a few times before it sinks in.

Before I took medication I would not have to work so hard. Before I could listen to an instructor and retain the information, today I forget step 1 after they finish explain step 2. My memory is bad, I believe because of the medication. The times I skipped my meds I was able to function and remember more easily, but my family believes I need medication and think if I get off it, I might end up in a hospital again, a cycle that has been ongoing for the last 8 years going into 9. In the past I stopped taking my meds and I get sick.

So my question is how can I improve my memory on meds for a mental illness? what can I do? I try to read everyday and that helps. When I stop reading I notice I find it hard to remember things.

Are you seeing a psychiatrist or is your general doctor prescribing these meds? You may need to try a different combination to see if your memory improves while also keeping your mood intact. This can take awhile because doctors don't like to change everything at once - they'd rather switch one thing at a time and slowly raise or lower a dosage. Just be aware there are likely multiple medications that can potentially help you.

Explain your issues and consider changing doctors to find someone who will work with you if your current doctor won't. I'm sure it's hard to be in school right now but stick with it!

Yeah, I will agree with the try-another-med approach.
