I was just wondering how long it takes for any possible side effects of meds to show up if they are going to. I posted I started taking Eliquis a week ago, and so far so good, not having any issues. Would any have shown up by now or can they show up down the road? Not talking about bruising, etc. just the other things like dizziness, GI issues, rash, etc.

Certainly it would vary depending partly onthe type medication and all the inactive ingredients each contains! Even an allergic reaction might not show up immediately, only after your immune system gets sensitized to the allergen. A severe anaphylactic reaction would probably be quick.

As I always told my patients:

Any human can react/or not react to any medication in any way

Ok, I just talked to my friend and she's taken many of the blood thinners since the afib hit her about 5 yrs ago and she's had s/e with all of them but Eliquis and it's the latest BT med and the most expensive as we both agreed. Kasier is now giving it to more of their patients and she does have a fairly hefty copay but she can handle it, says she takes 5mg tab two times daily. So, there you are from my camp.

Side effect from not taking Eliquis or other anticoagulant for treatment of thrombophlebitis

Sudden death....kind of trumps other possible annoyances....

About the only "real" side effect of Eliquis is bleeding or bruising. (Allergic reactions can occur to any drug.) Remember that anticoagulants don't MAKE you bleed. They just slow down clotting, so any bleeding that would occur anyway takes longer to stop and becomes more obvious. That's why any bleeding or bruising you get while on an anticoagulant should ALWAYS be investigated. Don't let the doc blow it off as "too much drug."

The FDA has some pretty stupid rules. While under investigation, all symptoms reported by the study pts for the test drug must be reported as a side effect in the package insert. That's why common things like headache, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, itching etc are listed for just about all drugs-- because those things are bound to be reported by someone, even those on the placebo...What really counts (but often isn't reported in the insert) is the rate of a complaint on the test drug vs the placebo.

For any drug, any new symptom you get should be reported to your doc. Let them figure it out if it's the drug, the disease or something new.

Thanks all. I have been on it a couple weeks now with no issues, seems to be a pretty good med. I was mostly concerned about the possible internal bleeding that a few experience.

Only issue is cost - very expensive even with co-pay.

My husband took it for six months and didn't have side effects. He is prone to getting cuts, smashed fingers, and other minor injuries at work (he's a mechanic), and he reported that to his surprise, he wasn't bleeding any more or getting any more bruises on Eliquis than he did before.
