I have a hiatal-hernia and GERD............trust me, it is not imaginary.
PPIs have always seemed kooky to me, constantly having decreased stomach-acid, probably not a good idea.
But Zantac (Ranitidine) is an H2-blocker that has been around for a very long time and has a good track-record, considered very safe...........HUM! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranitidine
Ranitidine was discovered in 1976 and came into commercial use in 1981. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the safest and most effective medicines needed in a health system. It is available as a generic medication.
My father had a hiatal hernia. It's pretty extensive surgery to fix so if you can keep it under control with a PPI or H2 blocker that's what docs recommend. I get a lot of reflux in my sleep as I have gotten older. Probably genetically inherited hiatal hernia. If I eat right and keep my weight down I don't need anything, but I take an H2 anyway because there is not much that's worse than waking up chocking on bile. And reflux like that gives you cancer.

I think people can have genetic structural defects. I had a lot of ear infections as a kid, which now many people think might be associated with reflux in infants/small children. My dad and sister both have reflux and none of us are overweight. Typically, mine is more silent, but like you, I occasionally have problems where I wake up choking. I typically rely on the wedge pillow and dietary modifications, but sometimes I still need the H2 blocker as it seems to get worse during certain times of my cycle or when I am having bad allergies.

Same here with the allergies (or a cold). My reflux is always at its worst when I have sinus drainage. It's by far the biggest reflux trigger for me, much more so than any food, alcohol etc.
Wife's sister was told by doctor to take zantac, did so for a few years now has a bad kidney, senior.
Are you suggesting causation??
PPI's may have some link with renal disease though it is still unclear..
Correlation does not equal causation and I am unaware of any significant risk of renal disease from H2 blockers.
"The link to kidney disease did not appear when the researchers looked at medications such as Zantac and Pepcid, which combat heartburn in a different way, by blocking histamine production in the cells that line the stomach." https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...idney-disease/
IMHO, more evidence that esophageal and stomach cancers -- which have been increasing are NOT caused by anything natural.
It is such a scam... doctors tell you that you have "gerd" -- but you have zero symptoms of it... then they give you these drugs that cause cancer (PPIs also do as well) and gastroenterologists get themselves a new boat.
Disgusting.
But what does this all mean concerning Brian Dennehy's residuals?

Silent reflux. LPR. I have both. It took me a year to learn that it was not a sinus, or throat problem. I will get a gastro exam shortly. A leaky valve between the gullet, and stomach can do all kinds of damage. And there is no heartburn with this type. It's flavorless.
I bought Pepcid today as I’m down to my last Zantac. I hope it works. I was told to still take it 2 times a day even though it says once a day.
