A few days before my period up until a few days or more after it starts I can only wear lose pants with a string tie closure. My jeans or any elastic or button pants are so tight I can barely button or zipper nor can I sit in them all day. It goes back to normal for a few weeks and then starts over again. One day I can button pants the next day I’m sucking in just to button and zipper and my stomach is hanging over like I’m 6 months pregnant. Sometimes the scale says 5 to 10 lbs more and sometimes it doesn’t. I try not to eat a lot of salt or carbs but that doesn’t help.

This type of bloating is not uncommon with endometriosis. Lining grows outside the uterus. Have you tried a low FODMAP/anti-inflammatory diet? Many women have trouble digesting foods around their periods and eating foods that are harder to digest during this period just makes the the bloat worse. This doesn’t really have to do with carbs or sugar, as many fruits/vegetables are very hard to digest and can cause a bloat. Obviously refined carbs and salt are not going to help, but you probably need to do more and stick with the low FODMAP foods during this period.

Bloating (fluid retention) is a common part of PMS. Hormones have powerful effects on your body's control mechanisms for fluids. Not eating certain foods may help ease your symptoms, but usually do not address the underlying issue.

It's also possible that you have something else going on that is affecting the control mechanisms during your period.

It's been over 20 years since I've had to worry about PMS, and much may have changed in treatment options. See your doc.

In the meantime, try some different herbal teas that known for their diuretic action. Herbal teas certainly don't work for everyone every time, but no harm in trying. Dandelion is a known one. Plus, when you are feeling miserable, hot tea can be very comforting!
