I think the thing that worries me is the responsibility part. I can see it happening that if anything bad happened with this, whether it's medical, or having an auto accident due to being high on MJ that the responsibility & ramifications will fall back on me and other siblings and not the sibling that is encouraging the use.
Even though my sister is not a bad person, it's responsibility that she has very little of. Notice I mentioned she smokes MJ every day. LOL. She isn't doing volunteer work or holding down a job.
How so? That seems farfetched.
I don't like when people compare it to alcohol or other medications, and I don't partake myself. However, rationally the implications in terms of an adverse medical reaction or an accident as a result of being intoxicated aren't extremely significant, unless you don't trust your mother not to drive if she's intoxicated.
I have used marijuana edibles for my severe headaches. I actually HATE being high with a passion. But it is an effective way to deal with pain that stresses me out and makes me miserable. Edibles obliterate me. And they don't do THAT much for the pain, except they make me not care about it enough that I can sleep.
Given that back pain is frequently treated with addictive opiates, I think MJ is a great option for your mother if you are confident she will not drive under the influence. I think some puffs on a joint before she goes to bed may be just what your mother needs.
I would be giving it to my father like crazy if I didn't know that it can make dementia worse.
That's not necessarily true. Preliminary, very early research indicates it might actually improve dementia cases. Stick with minimal doses, and make Dad take a 10 minute break between hits to come on. One hit of quality retail weed should be sufficient, and it is also an excellent pain killer.
There is no doubt that pot makes teenagers stupid. It may have the opposite effect in the elderly. Marijuana use in people over age 65 is increasing rapidly, so somebody is getting some good out of it. Here's an article from Scientific American on the topic.
There are other safer medicinal plants available for her pain reduction.
The Era age of endorsing Pot is like a Doctor telling you to take two aspirin and call him in the morning. Its become that MUCH of a generic response to folks.
Smoking in and of itself is not healthy--- Period.
Next summit to the voice of reasoning should come from the reasonable daughter. Have the talk ...its what a caring member would do.
I am sitting here, picturing one of my two sons casting judgment on me (because that is what is happening here) for trying something to improve my quality of life. The only thing that registers is sadness, no debate of right or wrong. Just complete sadness.
It's a good thing I know I won't being this mom's shoes. Neither of my boys partake, never interested (and both have the strong desire for Top Secret Security clearances), but if I wanted to give it a go, they would be the first to help me with the search - notice I said search, I would have to buy
Why are people still smoking when edibles are so widely available?
Let mom try this, it may help her back.
Well...if you're buying pot from a legal dispensary, it's EXPENSIVE. If you're buying it from your BIL's friend's cousin...it's probably not in edible form.

Honestly, it seems like every time I turn around it's being touted as a cure for everything from baldness to cancer to chronic pain to anxiety and dementia.
Not buying it. I'm not saying there aren't legitimate medicinal benefits but they're treating it like exercise and fresh air.
You mention that your mom has back pain. Did your mom say anything about whether her trial indulgence of cannabis helped to at least reduce some of her back pain? Do your sister and her husband smoke cannabis in joints, pipes or bongs? Or do they use a vaporizer?
Good questions. I see nothing wrong with using cannabis to fight medical issues. The pharmaceutical industry is horrible; a friend who did medical transcription won't take any drugs including aspirin. I'm taking my time and getting off two prescriptions and smoking at night only because cannabis isn't as harmful as the garbage prescribed. I'm not as old as the mom but I'm up there. I use a vaporizer and man, does it give me relief. I can also sleep sort of well. I'm working on it. (Vaporizing supposedly takes the harmful elements out of the flower. It does feel and taste "clean" for lack of a better description.)
