A lot of these designs are going around, using vacuum cleaner bags and HVAC filters.

Be careful, these filters may be made with fiberglass and other substances which are not meant to be inhaled. After getting excited about this idea, then looking into it further, I decided to not use these materials. Some of the companies that make hem have issued warnings regarding their use in face masks.

YMMV.

I'm making face coverings with a double layer of cotton fabric and then two layers of shop towels as a filter insert. Not the Scott shop towels because they contain latex. I think having a nose wire is an important part of the mask.

Definitely. Your mask should fit to your face with no gaps anywhere.

Good point: I have also read about using coffee filters. yesterday while out I couldn't believe how many different materials were being used by individuals. Everything from home made, to surgical masks.

It doesn't matter what you use for a filter if your mask is not tight fitting (like an N95). Air will take the path of least resistance and will come in around the sides of your homemade mask. Masks are to protect others from YOUR droplets and maybe to protect you from others' droplets.
