I was incredulous. How could somebody think that it's something that you have to 'believe in'? Is she [expletive] stupid?
So sure, intelligence in general. But you're saying minorities are less intelligent and that's why they are more likely to get sick? Just some clarification....

Link? Or is that just what you "think?" Because every expert opinion says it's because of underlying health issues and lack of access to healthcare both due to socio-economic reasons.

Black Americans disproportionately have higher rates of chronic illnesses such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes and stroke which are diet and lifestyle diseases. The traditional soul food diet includes large amounts of meat, saturated fat, sugar and salt, and is directly related to these illnesses. We have been told repeatedly that underlying chronic illness puts you at higher risk for COVID-19 and for worse outcomes.

I also cited two examples of genetically controlled situations that are correlated with worse outcomes that may help explain those differences. You're right-- it's not proof, but it's highly suggestive and deserves more study.

You don't seem to understand the concept of allelic frequencies in different populations. For example, they found over 30 different alleles for the gene AcCoA carboxylase in the pea plant. If allele 1, say, occurs more frequently in variety 1 of the pea, that doesn't mean it can't also occur in variety 2-- just at a lower frequency in the group as a whole https://www.mdpi.com/1422-0067/20/7/1773/htm ....

….Same with genes that help or hurt with CoViD. Just because an allele that hurts is more frequent in blacks, it doesn't mean it's exclusive to blacks, or that all blacks have it.

Another example: as a group, blacks are less likely to respond with lower BP to ACE inhibitors, even tho, paradoxically, they have higher ACE levels (ie- theoretically should respond more strongly), on average, than whites.... Explain that one on the basis of socio/economic factors.
Yes, although those genes impact chronic conditions, not COVID19 in general. Mediterraneans are at greatest risk for COVID19 and worse outcomes given that they've had most cases and deaths.

We will have to determine what genes are contributing to their increased risk and poorer outcomes, specifically to COVID19.

The very health issues that make dying from COVID more likely - diabetes, hypertension, asthma, obesity - are already more prevalent in blacks than whites. Stands to logic, then, a disproportionate amount will die from COVID.

Those other factors you are all kicking around may play a role - but I'm not sure they need to.

OK, things in China and asian countries were bad and the people there are living very close together and in tight family groups so you would have thought would have spread very quickly between family members and throughout the society.

USA has a much larger infected rate because they have not followed the distancing procedures so well perhaps as some asian countries.
Don't believe all the stats you read about the Asians, especially China. As for other countries, remember we do keep better records and in many cases we are talking a very large country compared to smaller ones. You just can't depend on numbers alone.

Good points

As evidenced by that family in Florida/Jersey, where 9 of them got it after a party (early on in the pandemic,) maybe, probably not. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/coronav...mily-freehold/

And when you acknowledge that New York City is a dense place and it's the worst hit, I think it's pretty easily accounted for as the single biggest factor.
It has been mentioned on news broadcasts often and in the newspaper. I don't have any idea how some could have missed hearing it.

Again, the worldwide global numbers show that anyone of any race, any ethnicity, any age can get this and die. The global impact shows that there are no magic genes putting any race at more risk than the other. The hundreds of thousands of Italians and Chinese that died must have had those set of genes that put them at more risk, which is why they are leading the world in cases and deaths.

Genes always play a role, although, with viruses (especially this one), the global spread shows you that genes are not the major driver.

I am a healthy white (Polish-decent) American. Overall health seems to be a better indicator of impact. No matter what race you are. Which is why Chinese, Italians, and Spaniards are leading the world in cases and deaths. Given that diversity, it shows that blacks are not at more risk for bad covid outcomes than whites or any other races.

If it is based on genetics and you are Mediterranean, given the number of cases and deaths out of Italy/Spain, unfortunately YOU are at greatest risk for getting COVD19 and having a worse response.

Although, I don't think catching covid and its outcomes are majorly influenced by racial genetics . To some extent yes (which is always the case), but definitely not the major factor.
Higher rates of infection have been posted by many sites now. It does make sense to me, as I think that blacks suffer generally poorer health. Obesity is certainly an issue.

A lot of that has to do with economic circumstances. Poverty leads to all of those issues, even among poor white Americans. Add to the fact that they have limited access to healthcare, and it's the perfect storm for chronic medical conditions.
