The key here is the type of alcohol used. Ethanol or isopropanol-based hand sanitizers are OK (unless of course you insist on being stupid and drink the stuff or let your kids ingest it). Ethanol sanitizers need a minimum of 60%, 70% for isopropanol to be effective.

It's the methanol that's the problem.

I make my own mix of hand sanitizer for use after visits to the store or any other public place. 2 parts of 90 percent isopropanol alcohol and 1 part aloe vera gel. Then I add some drops of Vitamin D oil to lubricate the skin, to counter against the drying affect of the alcohol. Safe, cheap, effective.

I used some stuff at a fast food restaurant the other day that stunk terrible, I ended up using another sanitizer I had to wash off the original stuff!

Ethanol (the kind you can drink) Is a well known poison/neurotoxin. Methanol, which will kill or blind you if you drink enough of it, is fairly safe as a hand sanitizer, even though it also poison.
