Do you also have any edema (water retention and swelling) in your legs? If so, ask your cardiologist about congestive heart failure, which can be managed by diet and lifestyle changes.

Ask your cardiologist about hypertrophic cardiomyopothy (HCM) or find a cardiologist who is familiar with HCM. It is thickening of the heart. It prevents your heart from pumping efficiently.

Have you been tested for allergies? If your allergy issues are at home and you don’t have them at the allergist/pulmonologist, then your PFTs will come out largely normal. I know I had a similar issue to you about 1/5 years ago. I was having some HORRIBLE allergy issues at work because the HVAC system was not working properly and was like a blast furnace on my head. I had a coworker come in and say he got a sinus headache immediately upon entry into my office. PFTs in the doctor’s office have been normal.

I started to have chest pain, postnasal drip, and heartburn. Apparently there is a type of heartburn that is caused by allergies, and whenever my allergies flared up, it was just awful. It got to the point where I was waking up feeling like I was drowning in acid at night as it was just up to my throat. My PCP put me on Protonix and I got a daily inhaler from my allergist that I now use in the winter and it has helped a lot. I still have a little winter shortness of breath (I am extremely allergic to dust), but nothing like I was having before. Usually now before I go to the gym in the winter, I just take my inhaler as a precaution and take it when I am feeling it after deep cleaning.

Heart hiccup? Sounds like arrhythmia. Have you had ultrasound (echocardiagram)?

Are you overweight? Other health condition?

Hedgehog Mom, vocal cord dysfunction would unlikely yield a normal PFT.

Hscho01, I'm not usually given to histrionics but your symptoms sound exactly like those my late mother experienced. She had always been very healthy but started having shortness of breath that was not relieved by lying down. It progressed to other symptoms (weakness, exhaustion, diarrhea, nausea, loss of appetite, etc) and she was tested extensively by two different cardiologists and a pulmonologist. Everything tested normal.

Then an astute doctor took a good look at her bloodwork/urine tests and sent her to an oncologist. She was finally diagnosed with both amyloidosis and multiple myeloma. Sadly, her diseases were too far gone by then for any treatments to work.

Chances are, you dont have anything this serious. But it's better to be checked out for it and find out you dont have it than not to be checked out and later wish you had.

You need to have your actual lung-function tested.......that will tell you if your breathing
is indeed weak/compromised.

The OP says that the PFT is normal, so there is nothing wrong there.

My doctor called today to further explain the PFT results.

As the results were normal, this suggests that I do not have any chronic lung diseases or asthma; therefore, my lungs are functioning properly. She did confirm that my lungs did not respond to albuterol which explains why my inhaler does not provide relief.

She seems to be stumped at this point. I am having bloodwork done on Wednesday and she is going to consult with another doctor to see what he/she suggests. Today, I feel as though there is something sitting on my chest and I have been quite exhausted although I slept from 10:00Pm-8:00Am. I have been quite thirsty for water a little more excessively than normal.

I am crossing my fingers that the proper testing is ordered soon. I’d like to be able to perform daily tasks let alone be able to speak or sing without becoming winded.

Have you seen an ENT? You said you have postnasal drip/drainage. There could be a vocal cord issue. The ENT can do a scope that starts at your nose and goes through your throat to see if you have any issues there.

I’m sorry to hear this, OP. I am going through something similar, only with random palpitations. Of course everything is perfect on paper. There is nothing worse than being told there is nothing wrong with someone when these things continue to occur. Just a short time ago, we didn’t have these issues. While my cardiologist seems competent, he has nearly no concern about my palpitations. I decided to see a Herat specialist, along with a sleep apnea test and an ENT. It is beat to try every avenue as long as you can handle the insurance.

Keep us posted. We Spain’s you the best of luck. If your cardiologist is perplexed, it may be time to get a second opinion.
