Do you wipe down your groceries? What is the reason for your decision?

In March, a medical person made a video demonstrating how to disinfect groceries. Shortly after, there were several articles with quotes from other medical professionals who said the video's advice was extreme, probably not necessary, and that they didn't wipe down their groceries. The articles I saw were in April, and there doesn't seem to have been any changes in advice since then.

At the beginning of the pandemic I was wiping everything down. Now I don't. At the beginning of the pandemic we knew nothing about how the virus operates. Now we know more, and I think the accepted wisdom now is that wiping down groceries isn't necessary.

I still am careful to wash my hands frequently during the day or use sanitizer when washing isn't available.

Never have, never will. I don't even own any disinfecting products or sanitizer. I just wash my hands with soap.

I believe the risk of becoming ill from handling grocery items (or mail, etc.) is so slim that cleaning them is not worth the trouble. I have other, better things to do.

The good news is that there might be a hospital bed open for you depending on where you live.

We wipe everything coming into our home. I'll take no risk over slim risk any day

Exactly what we do.

Thanks for the kind thought.

I'm not worried.

I never did wipe down groceries or mail or anything. I wash my hands regularly, don't touch my face, and wipe down surfaces like counters and doorknobs. Since March we've learned more about how this virus is spread through personal contact, not from touching things.

There are much more dangerous viruses and microbes on your desks, door handles, floor in a supermarket and they do get into contact with your supermarket bags when they are on the floor. Does that mean you'll lick the store products? If you are that worried about viruses you should live in bubble. Coronavirus may be passed to a human by touching but doesn't mean it'll make you sick unless you inhaled the vapors that carries them or directly pick your nose with a dirty finger.

There are billions of viruses and microbes. Maybe people need to worry about keep your hands washed at all times and stop touching your nose.

Agree. I've never done it either.

No, I don't bother.

Because, once upon a time I worked in a virus lab. I have knowledge as to how long a virus can remain viable on a dry surface. I have knowledge as to the primary mode of infection, which is why anyone not wearing a mask will be treated rudely by me if he/she insists on getting too close.

Now, if we were talking about a bacteria such as C. Diff. that can remain viable for a very long time, my response would be different.
