Everyone is free to do what makes them feel comfortable; I myself don't live any differently than I did "pre Covid" except that I have to wear a mask to shop or enter a business now. Never wiped down groceries and still don't, and really don't use much sanitizer. I do stay away from crowds and I also wash my hands a LOT but that's about it. And I drink my daily two glasses of wine for "medicinal reasons."
The current information is that transmission by formites (surfaces touched) is not significant, although as always, that's going to be situational. Surfaces inside the room of a covid-19 patient: Highly likely.
But we have to remember that the great majority of people are not shedding covid-19 virus.
The great majority of grocery items come and go pretty quickly and have been touched only minimally by people unlikely to be infectious.
The chances of there being active virus on most surfaces in the grocery store are minuscule. There are some surfaces that are exceptions, of course, such as door handles and the credit card reader buttons. Probably a higher risk with those items. I'm careful about touching items that I can be sure have been touched many times by many people during the day.
I think different responses are needed in different areas. If you're in a hot zone then yes, wipe down everything. We are in a hot zone with our positivity rate climbing again. We take every precaution, and that includes washing all groceries, and letting non perishables decontaminate for three days in the basement before putting them away. I transfer foods for the freezer into freezer bags. It takes up less room, and it's cleaner. It's sad watching our cases of Covid climb by over 1,000 a day for the whole state again. We are going backwards and we all have to step up and do what's right to stop this. Too many all about me people out there. Being overly clean is better than not.
No way, I guess all you who wipe down everything believe the employees sneeze and cough and blow their noses on the foodstuffs....can't help but detect some OCD issues there too. Our bodies do need some germs and I get a few I'm sure....and if I started licking my floors I'd get more. ummm
