Coronavirus can significantly impact brain function, causing mental decline equivalent to the brain aging 10 years, according to an alarming new study.
A study of more than 84,000 people in the UK found that the virus left even those deemed recovered with “chronic cognitive consequences” that it compared to dropping 8.5 IQ points.
COVID is a multi system destroyer that we will be living with the repercussions for many years to come
Moderate to severe cases of COVID-19 is essentially the development of pneumonia, and pneumonia has been associated with onset of dementia or mild cognitive impairment due to a drop in oxygen levels in the body.
It's irrelevant whether they had some other disease. In the study, a significant number of people aged 65 and over experienced a decline and those under 65 did as well. The direct cause is the reduced level of oxygen in the blood flow to the brain during a severe respiratory illness. The same thing occurs with anesthesia for major operations and why they monitor the oxygen level while you're under. You need to be versed in the topic, not just repeat political talking points, and the lack of knowledge shows.

So what you're saying then, is this was already known and is not newsworthy?
i think a lot of the cognitive impairment comes from the sedatives patients are given.
The study found that cognitive deficits "scales with symptom severity and is evident amongst those without hospital treatment." So its not that.
However this is not a peer-reviewed study so more research is needed.
