My cousin has the worst case of psorasis I've ever seen- she will use a shampoo with pine tar in it now and again, but it's really harsh on you hair.
Try tea tree oil and see if that works and of course, use cortisone cream to help with the itch.
Good luck and I hope you find some relief!
There is a good site on the web that describes psoriasis and its treatment.
I can also recommend Dr. Patricia Roddey at Mecklenburg Medical Group, 3030 Randolph Road as an excellent dermatologist. I haven't seen her for psoriasis but I have for other hard-to-get-rid-of skin conditions and she' s resolved them for me.

Gail,
Long time sufferer here. This is what works for me. Primrose oil and salmon oil. I can really tell the difference when I take different oils.
You can try tar shampoo for some relief.
Also -- and you can try this one tonight -- apple cider vinegar (ACV). I have a little syringe (no needle) that I fill up with ACV and put onto my scalp. It takes the itch away and cleans the scalp. My hair is nice and soft afterwards. You can put it on your head with a little cotton. The smell goes away when the vinegar dries....
The ACV also works for dry itchy skin. When the itch is so intense, just moisten a paper towel or washcloth with plain undiluted ACV(the organic, natural one like Braggs) and lay it on the skin. I have tried virtually everything, all kinds of medicated creams and ointments, and ACV is the one that works the best. It's amazing. People use it for all kinds of things.

Please go to the National Psoriasis Foundation website for information on both Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis.
Good luck...
