Yesterday, I donated blood, and the Red Cross screens all donations for Covid antibodies (results in about a week). I was hoping that it would show that I had antibodies from the vaccinations, but the technician said that it would not. It would only show antibodies if you had had Covid and recovered from it.
Can anyone explain this? I thought that vaccines worked by causing us to form antibodies.
"The CDC discourages antibody testing for assessing immunity after getting the vaccine. In clinical trials, the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines were shown to protect people against the virus 95 percent of the time and 94 percent of the time, respectively. But that does not mean everyone who gets the vaccine would test positive for antibodies.
Commercial antibody tests may not be searching for the same antibodies that the vaccine triggers. Someone who has had the vaccine and is immune to the virus may still test negative for certain antibodies.
In any case, antibodies are only part of a person’s immune system response. Some studies have shown that protective T cells, a white blood cell that helps protect against disease, have been elevated in some patients with covid, even though the patients had no detectable antibodies."
I believe that the vaccine helps your body to start making a certain protein to be able to fight the virus. The vaccine doesn't contain a live or dead virus from what I understand.

I hope you waited the 2 weeks necessary from the last vaccine to the donation. Extremelly Important
At any rate ck your results in at least 10 days from the donation date , you might be pleasently surprised
When you get sick with a virus your body initially produces IgG antibodies to fight off the infection, then produces IgM antibodies (the 'memory" antibodies) so your body will be ready to fight off a future infection from that virus.
It depends which type of antibodies they test for whether they detect the antibodies or not.
The IgM antibodies are the important ones for long lasting immunity to future infection.
Read the donating blood thread - this has been addressed.
