Not that this helps really but I know someone who has them every 6 months. . . which makes 2 years seem reasonable!

Okay, but in my experience, doctors never suggest the cheaper, less invasive alternatives, which are considered good.

It's probability because you are high risk and all of the less invasive alternatives are not recommended for high risk patients.
