Hello there all my name is John and I have a broken leg. Here is my story. Nov. 15 ,2007 two days before my sisters wedding I was headed to the mall for a new pair of boots for the wedding. I was on my Harley pulling down the turn lane when a car cut through traffic and T-boned me. I remember saying OH **** and then was on the ground. Was taken to the ER where they claimed it was the worse break they had seen. The bone was barely even in the skin. Well 2 long plates and 30 screws later I came out of surgery. Spent a month in the hospital with 3 wound vacs where the bone came out. Had 3 experimental muscle grafts put in they all took well. Got out of the hospital on Dec. 15, 2007 and went home with a wheel chair and the high hopes of moving up to a walker.
I started on a walker and made my way up to crutches. On Feb 14, 2008 I was allowed to put 50% weight on the leg. I also had 3 skin grafts. The skin grafts took pretty good except the one under my knee. It is not doing good doc says I might have to have another one. It is a small spot but seaps all the time and now has a yellow coating over it. It really is quite nasty. They have allowed me to gradually put more weight on it. I dont take no pain pills quit taking them in the hospital. This sure is a long road. I had pushed my right leg up into my chest 7 inches and that healed in no time compared to this. Anybody have any complications with skin grafts give me a yell. Thxs for listening.

P.S. The bike turned out fine and that old 58 Panhead is still rolling down the road unfortunatly it is a kick starter so I am not sure of our future together.

Hello:

I broke by tib/fib first part of Jan 2008 and I am still recovering. I still cannot wear normal shoes but I am wearing high top tennis shoes. I have rod in my leg and had six screws placed. Three screws are on the side of my ankle and
they look like bumps. I am wanting them out but the doctor says it is too early to take out. I was an active person before this all started. I slipped on my kitchen floor and fell sideways causing the tibia to break. I do not have much pain but in the morning sometimes I get a little stiff. I have a sit down job. I find soaking it in a whirlpool helps alot. I am not doing therapy as my doctor says it will heal on its own. They say the recovery time is almost a year. I am getting depressed over it. I was very active.

It is very painful at the end of the day...but I can get long during the day with persistence. They placed 2 plates and 13 screws. The swelling is tremendous at the end of the day, but in the morning it is almost normal. I go back to the surgeon on Tues the 22nd to find out the next step. Did not need any rehad, have been able to move along on my own.
I can relate to your story. I am very depressed also. I go to the doctor in two weeks. My ankle swells up at night also. If you keep elevating it, it does help. Also whirlpool therapy. I had a rod put in mine. I also have screws. I feel for you. Drink plenty of fluids and think positive.

I had a rod put in and screws top and bottom. Im on partial weight bearing as orderd by my ortho doc. and on physio as well. I think this is the most challenging part of my life having to go through with all of this. Physio said that try to work out for one crutch by 8 weeks. Its sound very encouraging but im dreading the pain. Still ankle swollen a bit but good to mobilise it often. Just very frustrating sometime, I guess well all just be patient. Time heals

I broke my tibia and fibula in 1/08 falling on the kitchen floor. I am 4 months postop. Go to the doctor 5/19 to see if any bone healing. I am partial weight bearing also. I have found hydro therapy very useful and I have 6 screws in my ankle. I want my screws out especially on the side of my ankle as they look like bumps and rub against my shoe. I am making the best of this situation. It has changed my life dramatically. I am 58 years old and this is the worst fracture in all my life. Hang in there. I know how you feel.
I have a desk job so I can go to work. I only drive to work and home.
I know what you are going through.

Hi everyone..

My name is Christy and I was in a car wreck on March 9, 2008. I had originally posted this in my own thread -- didn't see this great one first. So, I decided to just transfer it over here. I am amazed at how many people are experiencing the same injury. Here is my story...

An older couple ran a stoplight and hit me on the passenger side. (thank God I was by myself or my son would have been in the passenger seat) Anyways.. it pushed the car I was driving 117 feet. When the car stopped, I opened the door to let out the airbag fumes and realized my left leg was broken.. (the thigh and foot were in alignment - but my lower leg was off to the side) I later found out I had a 50% displacement.. Ouch!!

When I got to the hospital - they xrayed and found that I had broken the tibia twice and the fibula once. About 12 hours later I finally went into surgery and they inserted a rod into the tibia and a screw at the ankle and knee.

I went for my first PT session a few weeks ago and it still hurts like H***!!! I am just starting to weight bare as tolerated. I have made some progress with the mobility of my knee and ankle. I am still in a wheelchair for most outdoor outings. I still have alot of swelling at the knee and ankle/foot. Not to mention -- I am still extremely bruised and lately it seems I am getting additional bruises daily. All I can figure is the bruising is either working it way to the surface or I am just getting new ones now that I am adding weight.

I am still battling the "blues" now and my frustration level has hit an all time high.. I have always been an independent person and I am a single mother who is going to college full time. Fortunately, I did not have to drop the semester, that would have devastated me. I am finishing up my last semester at the local community college with my associates degree and start NC State in August. I feel like a kid whose mom drives them to school and escorts her into the building.. Sheesh..

I am so ready to walk again. I have told my friends and family (who have NO clue what this is like) that they will never hear me say "God, I wish I could have 1 day to lay around and do nothing!!".. I have had 7 1/2 weeks of it now..

I wish everyone here the best. You guys have answered so many questions for me already. Even things I wouldn't have thought of asking.. It is great to have an idea of what to expect during this journey..

Take Care,
Christy

The foot is bright red within 10 seconds. It's been a long 3 weeks and i know it's going to be a while until things get better. Does anyone have any good advice to help reduce this swelling? It's nice to speak to people in the same boat. it can get pretty depressing and frustrating as all you guys know. good luck to you all.
Cheers.

I broke by tibia and fibula in January of this year. I am four months postop.
I went back to work also. I have a sit down job. I am very frustrated also.
I slipped on my kitchen floor. I have a plate, 6 screws and a rod in my right ankle. I am partial weight bearing. I go back to the doctor on 5/19. I hope I can have my screws removed as they really bother me. I am having alot of paranoia about the whole thing. Any ideas in how to think positive?

Sandy
