Hi, does anyone have any recommendations for a cooling bandana? I live in Central Texas and it's already becoming ferociously hot. I looked on Amazon but there are so many available, I don't know where to start! I don't care what it looks like as long as it works well. Please, suggestions!!!

IME, most of them depend on the same mechanism to create the effect. The bandanna contains a pouch filled with highly absorptive gel beads. When dry, the beads are about the size of rice grains. You lay the bandanna in water and the beads soak it up and swell. When you lay the bandanna on your skin, your body heat starts drying the beads out again. As they do, they release their trapped moisture into the cloth fibers of the bandanna. The moisture evaporates, and evaporation creates the cooling effect on your skin. Read the product description to see how different bandannas being offered for sale work.

I've used one of these. They do work, but the effect is fairly subtle. Better than nothing! As one side of the bandanna next to your skin warms up and dries, you need to keep turning it over to expose different beads. Easy.

I've also seen some that apparently also incorporate a small fan to move air faster, but that seems much too complicated. Not to mention requires batteries and would lie heavier on your neck.

IMHO the fabric choices have little or nothing to do with it. Buy colors you like. I'd buy two so you can have one ready to go when the other needs to recharge.

Old fashion towel dipped in ice water. I know of several ball players that say those cooling towels or bandanas are a waste of money.

We have the fabric ones that you get wet, and they are nice and cool. When you shake it, it gets cool again. Subtle, but it helps to have it around your neck, we use them for camping and boating.

This company makes cooling towels, cooling hats and other items. My mom gave me one of their cooling towels.
