My dad is taking Flomax and Finasteride for an enlarged prostate. I have two questions.

The medicine seems to be working very, very well for him. Every single day he's had no trouble peeing, and does so in much greater quantities than before. However, the first day was where he peed the most by far. Is that normal for Flomax? He speculates that this is because he was draining the built-up fluid (he was diagnosed with urinary retention resulting from BPH), and that he's peed less from the second day onwards because his bladder has been less full. Is that accurate?

If the Flomax continues working, how long should it take his stretched bladder to heal and return to normal?

I recently 4/7/22 been started on Tamsulosin HCL and have been taking for BP for quite some time 20mg furosimide a water pill which has effective life of six hours,I take it at 8:30AM which was useful when my urine flow stopped at 2AM on and at this point went to doctor so bladder never affected, water pill started flow going. My med cost, generic at $7.70 for 90 day supply.MY side effects are stops working pretty much at 2AM and have pain to skin touch from prostate across abdomin.
Now my question,is Flomax a generic along with Finasteride and cost of med, along with are there side effects.
I know this message is lengthy but haven't brought this up to doctor yet.

Flomax isn't generic; Tamsulosin is the generic version of Flomax. Finasteride is generic, though. The non-generic versions of Finasteride are named Proscar and Propecia.

The most prominent side-effect for Flomax is dizziness, which affects about 15 percent of people. Finasteride can cause sexual problems but this is said to only occur in about 1 percent of people.

Flomax costs around $280 a month without insurance. Finasteride for me costs $20 a month without insurance. (I take it to prevent hair loss, not for BPH - I'm 34 so probably too young for prostate enlargement)

Your dad is lucky to be taking the actual brand, it works well. I don't think anyone can answer how long he will need it. He may be on it long term. I'm female taking it for bladder issues for 20 years now. Started with brand, am on generic about 10 years now. The generic I take is from CVS which is one of the better generics, some are pretty bad with side effects for me or they don't work at all.

CostPlus, Mark Cuban's new online drugstore, sells Tamsulosin (the generic for Flomax) for $15 (30 .4 mg. capsules). I detect no difference whatsoever between this and Flomax, and I switched to the generic about two months ago. I added a 5 mg. daily Cialis tablet to combat orgasm issues. I also time my daily dose of Tamsulosin around my sex life, i.e., I take it as far from my preferred romantic interludes as scheduling will permit. So far, so good.

Flomax is an alpha-blocker that helps regulate the function of the urnary sphincter. Pa will need it for life. Side effects are mostly related to it's effect in lowerng blood pressure, but can also include retrograde ejaculation...BTW- Pa should avoid taking any antihistamines (in allergy or cold tablets). They can cause serious, acute bladder obstruction.

Finasteride is a "testosterone blocker" and helps shrink an enlarged prostate. It's side effects are mostly feminization- breast enlargement, loss of body hair, sexual dysfunction. Men on this have a lower rate of prostate ca, but when it does occur, it's often worse...Another drug needed for life.
