The pain of a shot and/or stitches is not nearly as bad as the pain of infection and/or sepsis.

I cut off the tip of my finger. It was barely attached. I went to the ER and 6 hours later somebody sewed it back on. 9 stitches. Sent me home with an Rx for 5 days of antibiotics and told me to use antibiotic ointment. ER doc told me the "flap" would probably die in which case it would "grow back from underneath". The next day it turned black and the entire finger turned red but with the antibiotics most of the redness went away. On day 5 the redness was coming back and I was concerned about being out of antibiotics so I went to urgent care. The "practitioner" who saw me said she couldn't help me and told me to see a real doctor. At my prodding she did give me an Rx for more antibiotics. I called my doctor but they couldn't see me until the following week. I saw her the following week and she said it looked gross and had another doctor look at it. He said to keep taking the antibiotics, stop using the antibiotic ointment, and come back in a week. I went back a week later and they removed the stitches. Eventually the dead black flesh sloughed away exposing the new pink skin underneath.

That was 6 months ago. I haven't regained all the feeling in the fingertip yet.

You might not regain it. Depends on whether or not there was nerve damage.

I wouldn't go to the ER for a cut finger unless Urgent care was unavailable (around here we don't have 24/7 urgent care centers). Generally - the only time I would /want/ to go to the ER, is if an ambulance was taking me there. ER for me would always be the last choice, if other options were available and useful for the situation.

My daughter is a CNA at an ER and almost done with nursing school and told me it was more than urgent care could handle so she drove me to the ER. Considering that it was the same urgent care who later told me to go see a real doctor she was probably right, but I agree with your basic thesis, I avoid the ER whenever possible.

Super glue. That is what super blue was invented for. It is basically liquid stitches for the battle field. That is why it sticks to your skin like crazy (hence the brand name for the public "Krazy Glue").

I found this on the Rockefeller Express site:

In addition to its known capacity to promote bleeding events, aspirin also inhibits wound healing. New research published in The Journal of Experimental Medicine now describes how aspirin acts on key skin cells called keratinocytes, delaying skin repair at wound sites. A better understanding of this process offers hope for the development of drugs to encourage wounds to heal.

Sounds like whatever you thought you knew about aspirin - and baby aspirin is aspirin, too - was incorrect.

Didn’t use baby aspirin because I didn’t have any
Pressure dressing finally worked but took a day+
Now just need a bandaid to keep it protected
And use latex glove when I shower
