PEOPLE tend to gain weight as they age, or at the very least the weight shifts to different areas.
For instance, I had four kids and my last one was nine pounds so I had a big tummy. However, I bounced right back for many years and my tummy did too. The other day (I am 60 now), I noticed that my tummy skin is poochy - not that I care, but it is. I mean, it JUST got that way. It doesn't have as much elasticity as it used to, apparently. Oh well. My youngest is in his thirties.
I guess one way to determine this would be to ask women who are on estrogen ALONE following a hysterectomy if they've gained weight as a result, as any woman with a uterus is given progesterone in addition to estrogen, so it's hard to separate out which is doing what.
Some do (Americans in general are overweight due to overeating), even teenagers do, but it doesn't seem to be the pervasive issue for them that it is for post-menopausal women.

I didn't gain weight after I was on estrogen ALONE for ten years. Eventually I did gain a little bit of weight though but actually it was after I was off the estrogen. Several years afterward. I see no connection one way or the other.
When I was in college I took the "Enovid-E" birth control pill. It was extremely high in estrogen and was taken off the market not long afterward.
I gained weight IMMEDIATELY. It took ONE month to gain it and SEVEN months to get the weight off. and I was only 20 years old at that point. I think estrogen does do a number on some women, but not all.
"Why was Enovid discontinued?
As for Enovid, it's solitary reign was short-lived as other branded products appeared. And like other early pills, it eventually became linked to thrombosis and other health problems. Later prescribed in lower doses, production of the drug was discontinued in 1988."
