Wondering if anyone else has experienced this? I've been wearing my diamond studs for years. I change them out once in a while for some hoops that I've also had for years. All of a sudden, I'm getting infections in my left earlobe (piercing hole) now with any of the earrings. I've had to stop wearing them all together. Absolutely nothing has changed. Any idea of what is causing this? TIA

Full disclosure: I don't have pierced ears so haven't experienced infections. I have heard that infections can pop up years after the initial piercing.

Just another possibility:

What's the post metal? Are you certain what you're getting are actual bacterial infections, or could it be an acquired sensitivity/allergic reaction to the post?

I always felt I should air out my earlobes so I usually took them out every night. If they started feeling like an infection may start, I'd clean with rubbing alcohol a couple of times a day and avoid earrings until it felt better.

Yeah. I can't even wear any for a whole day without soreness. Somewhere along the line I developed eczema in the ear holes. At least, that's what it was designated to be.

That's what it sounds like--I have to be careful about what kind of earrings I wear. No nickel-plated posts. You can also wipe the posts with rubbing alcohol to make sure that they're clean when you put them on.

Thanks for the responses.

They're white gold. Again, I've literally been wearing these since I was 16. I'm 47 now. It's just started in the past couple of months so it's just very odd. I'll clean the posts with alcohol and clean my ears with hydrogen peroxide.

Old_cold---are you able to wear earrings anymore?

Or possibly white gold plated.

I've had pierced ears for 50 years and I still get infections if I wear studs that are too tight. I try to wear wires most of the time.

if your body is rejecting something, then it seems best to avoid that which harms the body

sounds like you've developed an allergy or reaction.
time to stop wearing them?

I've worn earrings for many years, both studs and dangles. But I generally take them out at night, as someone mentioned, to "air" them, and also to avoid losing an earring, which has happened to me when I wore them at night.

Cleaning the ears with peroxide before putting on earrings is a good idea. I also put a tad of triple antibiotic ointment on the posts before I put them on. This makes them slide through the hole easier, and I haven't had any infections there for years, even with base metals in the earrings.
