Talk to the doctor and get a different antibiotic. I have to do that if the doctor wants to use erythromycin, which works well but doesn't let me get more than 10 feet from a bathroom.

Are you taking it with meals? I always take amoxicillin and augmentin with a full meal to avoid diarrhea. You can also try yogurt or kefir.

take a probiotic every day while taking the antibiotics, and continue for a few days after.

The antibiotics kill all the bacteria, both harmful and beneficial. Taking the probiotics gives you enough of the beneficial bugs to digest your food before they die, then you replace them the next day, and the next.

Something I just learned is there are 100+ strains of penicillin. My husband took penicillin 6 years ago and developed hives, so was evermore deemed allergic to penicillin.

Fast forward to now, when he was getting his hip replacement removed because of the same infection and having IV antibiotics. The hospital pharmacist is an infectious disease specialist, and suggested they test his tolerance for a different strain of penicillin, which he’s tolerating just fine.

My point is there may be several other effective choices that OP will tolerate better than amoxicillin.

OP - Are you taking Amoxicillin or Amoxicillin Clavulanate.

Make sure to read directions, it's my understanding that both are to be taken right after a meal especially Amoxicillin Clavulanate is very strong and not to be taken on an empty stomach.

It's a good idea before taking anything to talk with a pharmacist.

I've read that most RX the dosage is way too high. Also, most RX seem to be much more dangerous.

It's a good idea to ask the Dr, about any RX what is the lowest effective dosage, how long do I need to take this, and what are the other options.

The probiotics are a good idea to take either when taking an antibiotic or right after entire RX. It's my understanding that if taking a probiotic when taking an antibiotic there needs to be at least a 4 - 5 hour time between the antibiotic and probiotic.

When I was hospitalized a few weeks ago one of the doctors suggested I take a probiotic.

He admitted he doesn't really know if they work but he thinks they might. Not exactly a ringing endorsement. Mayo Clinic says there is no clear evidence that probiotics are beneficial.

All I know is I’m haunted by a medical show episode in which the patient had had all her inner bacteria killed off by antibiotics. This condition required her to be given donor feces periodically to feel better. I’d be taking the probiotics.

I've read that people have different types of microbes, which can affect weight, food preferences, and other body functions. If you got the "fecal transplant" you're talking about, you might find your body change for the better or worse, depending on the donor.

When I was taking some very strong antibiotics a few years ago (Amoxicillin one time and Doxycycline another time), my pharmacist told me to get some probiotics. I bought a decently priced one which didn't work (about $18-20). I then went to Whole Foods and bought something for about $40. It didn't work either. Generally, probiotics work for many people, but for some people they don't. OP will need to try it out and see if it works for them.

I got a good brand of white yogurt (Fage) with strains of lactobacillus and it gradually helped. Too about 2 weeks.
