Hi!

I am asked to get the Hysterectomy done and I need help from anyone who has got it done on them in understanding the actual life after the surgery and it's effects/impacts. How will it change my life? Any help, information, insight is appreciated!

My Situation :
I am 47. I have 2 fibroids measuring around 2.3 cm and my uterus has become double the normal size (as big as 8 weeks pregnant) is what my sonography shows. My periods have been heavy for last 3-4 years, like for 7-8 days some months and Some months, it is just 2-3 days. I am anemic as well. I was asked to have a Hysterectomy, get rid of the Uterus and cervix keeping the ovaries.

Please help me by sharing your experiences to decide on my surgery.

Thank you!

https://www.hystersisters.com has support and information about hysterectomies. I found it very helpful. It's great you're keeping your ovaries, I understand that keeps your hormones normal.

I was 46 when I had a total hysterectomy. I had polycystic ovaries and it was horrible when the cysts would burst.

I had large tumors and my gynecologist finally scheduled the surgery. He changed the date several times (military doc) and when he saw me post op he apologized profusely for putting it off for so long; it turned out that the ultrasound didn't show the entire size of the tumors - multiple the size of softballs.

Recovery was fine (I did have a seroma), but it has been a blessed relief every day since the surgery (11 + years). I didn't have hot flashes and my hormone levels have been stable (but I am a medical anomaly).

My sister also had a hysterectomy, but kept her ovaries and she, too has had such relief. I hope that you will also have relief.

how do you think it will change your life?

I had one at 52 including ovaries. my life didn't change at all other than I was not so uncomfortable all the time with irregular bleeding, an improvement.

recovery was very easy, mine was trans-vaginal, one night in hospital. surgery was Thursday I was back at work on Monday.
little to no pain. that was 18 years ago.

I did need HRT which to me is no big deal.

Hi, Melanie. My 28 yr. daughter has polycystic ovaries and crohns that is now in remission but still on meds. I am wondering if the ultrasound she had done is somehow missing the entire size. She had the vaginal ultrasound which detected them and he seemed to think just leave them at this point. They said she most likely has IBS as well which is what is causing her cramps at this point. I guess, I fear it is her ovaries.

Schuttzie

The ultrasound may not reflect the true number or size - perhaps she might ask if the Dr. could order a CT or MRI.

What happened to me is not very common, thankfully the procedures tend to work out just as expected.

Wish your daughter good luck for me.

I have not had a hysterectomy, but from those women I know who have had one the most common comment is, "I only wish I had done it sooner."

Thank you so much! She may need to ask for more tests.

Talk to the doctor about the possibility of removing the fibroids, rather than the entire uterus. That's what my wife had done. She didn't know she had fibroids until she got pregnant at 40, and nearly lost the baby when one of the fibroids became necrotic from growing too fast. 3 months after delivering our son, she had 6 fibroids removed, one of them was 7cm. That was 20 years ago, and she's had no more issues. Removing the fibroids made her periods livable and less painful, and the cramping she had had for years disappeared.
