Great! What you said reminded me why I don't use nasal spray. Way back in the day I noticed a lot of rebound from products like Afrin. That's how we get hooked into a never-ending cycle. Many years ago I visited New England in the summer. I discovered I was highly allergic to acacia tree blooms. I went from 1/4% to 1/2% to 1% Sudafed within a couple, and finally it didn't work at all. This was way before it was restricted. They work for a while but then you need more and more, and stronger 'til it doesn't work at all.

Ug I used to be plagued with those things years ago and ended up having sinus surgery which was one of the worst experiences of my life! 10 years later I ended up with one again and it was stubborn! My doc gave me antibiotics, but still no luck. I happened to have an appointment with a new allergist around that time and told him of my predicament and that my doc was talking surgery again and he told me to get the NeilMed sinus rinse kit and do a full bottle each nostril 3 times a day and dang it frikkin worked and you don't even want to know what I was flushing out!
Anyways had a follow up with the doc and he was pretty impressed. I think this particular method was still pretty new on the market, now they sell the kits at Costco. Great stuff! Highly recommend along with your treatment if it's ok with your doc. I know it saved me from a second surgery!
Good luck!

I'm very glad for you but that makes me angry. What kind of a doctor doesn't recommend nasal rinsing? What kind of a doctor opts for surgery right out the gate? I'm old and my doctors started recommending that when I was a child. That doctor should have known that nasal rinsing could have helped you.

Yeah I tried rinsing as mentioned earlier in the thread and it only made the congestion and pressure in my head worse.
I used nasal spray for weeks at a time when I was young, before the rebound effect was as well known as it is now. I came to regret it very much, and never ever ever use it more than 3 days now and try to avoid it completely.

My allergist lets me use Afrin only if I use it with Nasacort. I used it successfully for a year straight. I went off it recently because I do not like to be dependent on any routine and I like to do a reset with most OTC and prescription meds. Actually it was his nurse that gave me the tip; but, I saw him a couple weeks ago and he made a huge point of never taking Afrin alone.

That is great information Wile E. Wish we'd known this way back in the day (decades ago). At least we know now.

Well that nurse also tipped me off that my Flonase was causing my headaches.

Yeah I don't like Flonase either, not because of headaches but because it seems strong. I always say it doesn't agree with me when a doc mentions it.

But that's for allergies I presume. And how would that affect dependence, I wonder?
It turns out that Afrin and its kin is not even recommended for sinus infections.

Well, I get chronic sinus infections and congestion. I feel it helps with all of it. But, I also do a saline rinse occasionally too.
